Are you proud to be British / European?

No we dont, UK culture is different to say the French and very different to Romanians

From your perspective, perhaps. I doubt someone from, say, China would agree.

The UK, France and Romania: all culturally Christian countries, speak languages that use the same alphabet (and contain some of the same words), like the same sports, like a red meat and potatoes-heavy diet, were once part of the same empire...

Don't bring facts into this debate. Don't you know where you are posting?!

Seeing as the UK was conquered by the Normans and much of our legal system still uses French words I'd argue that we have quite a lot in common with the French. English is a mongrel language with words from loads of different languages all over the world. We also share a lot in common with the Germans because the English are a Germanic race. It is only the Scottish, Welsh, Irish and Cornish who are Celtic. The English are Anglo-Saxon and therefore Germanic.

Then I'd just identify as French British, for example. I still don't have anything to do with the other ~48.

So British culture shares a lot with Ireland. German culture is similar in many ways to other German-speaking countries such as Austria and Switzerland. Put that all together and identifying as European makes a lot of sense.

I am not proud of springing out between my mother's legs at a certain geographical location. It has no bearing on my personal achievements and, personally, if you're proud of something you have had no control over than you need to work on yourself somewhat...

Do you get Romanian restaurants in the UK ?

Proud to be English and on a wider scale British, but that's as wide as it goes as far as I'm concerned - I have never, currently do not and never will, consider myself European

This still makes no sense to me. Proud you were lucky enough to be born here? Proud of other people's achievements you had nothing to do with? Does not compute.

People are proud of their parents and siblings even though they didn't do what they did. I see no difference in being proud of your country. It is just on a larger scale.

The most laughable idea is that there should be no borders in the world. How can you think it would work with regards to things like importing good, people trafficking, terrorism, differing economic strengths, welfare handouts, crime, pensions, housing supply, schooling. What do you think would happen if we just said to the world "come to England and we will take care of you". The country would be ****** within 6 months.

i think the ideal of having no borders is kind of based along the line of getting everyone up to an equivalent social/economic standard before we start letting everyone go everywhere.

it makes sense, at some point long in the future we might want to say move to mars, and how can we hope to master interplanetary politics if we can't even unify a relatively small chunk of just one planet?

I think you can be proud of a countries historical achievements, political progress, fairness and equality when in comparison to others and used to exsert a form of superiority (lol), but once you publically express it and take it past that into expressing nationalism and patriotism you become a giant tool.

I disagree. What were we fighting for in WW2 or indeed any of the wars the UK has been in against dictators if not standing up for our countries past achievements and our values as a nation. Being proud is one way of expressing the belief that our countries principles are worth fighting for and defending. If I hadn't had certain medical issues when I was younger which meant I couldn't join I would have joined the army and would been proud to fight for our country. My father was in the RAF, my Uncles were in the Army, my grandad was in the Army. Lots of family were in the military and they all believed in this country.

When I see people saying they hate this country and they want to move abroad because of "liberals" and "immigration" and whatever else these people complain about I feel sad that they don't share my love of the country and also a big temptation to say "don't let the door hit you on the way out".

I am European but been in the UK since I was about 4 so over 25 years.

I would NEVER consider myself British, don't want/have a British passport.

Ok, I'll make it simple for you.

Is Britain part of Europe? Yes/No

If you answered yes, then ergo people living in Britain are European regardless of if they identify themselves as that or not.

Hopefully none of them words were too big for you.
I'll also let you consult your Ladybird book of geography for ease if needed.

You've seam to have missed the point of the post. But just for you "think that they are European because of a map done in the 1300s"
All because a map says so....hard work today.....oh no the kids are on holiday :(

There are moments I feel proud of being British and then I see some chavs and what little pride I had quickly disappears.

Can we replace them all with migrants? imagine the benefit to the economy.
