I am in need of a new phone. I am embedded in the Android world. But I am in two minds whether to get a high end phone on a contract or just replace my old phone with a cheapish mid range phone around the £250 mark.

Has anyone looked into the same recently. At first look there doesn't seem much benefit in getting a high end phone on a two year contract compared to buying a mid ranged SIM only phone such as a P2?

My wife has just had a Motorola G4 Play and I have no idea why anybody needs anything more powerfuil unless you play games and I don't mean Candy Crush.

I recently brought my daughter a Honor 6x for £225 it's a great phone and when it gets EMUI 5 it will be even better, for all but the real mobile enthusiast, this is more than sufficient. Decent display, good performance, good camera and 32gb storage which is expandable if required.

Samsung A5 2016 , can be had sim free for about £250-£260 , i have one as my works phone now. Decent size and screen

I also find it hard to justify more than £200 now, as it just becomes throw away material after 2 years, or worth about £30 second hand. Spending anymore and I risk having to worry about not dropping/losing more value in an easy to drop/lose piece of hardware. I agree, not much difference between £140 and £300. There are differences yes, but are the worth that money... not to me. Last month it was overdue to renew both mine and wife's phone. I got me a P9 Lite for £140 and her an Honor 6X for £200. I have not found an issue with either. Both do everything we need.

I really don't know why you would spend £200 when the Moto G4 Play is around £100.
When my Samsung breaks down it's what I'll go for.

I was in the same prediciment, I had two xiomais (one went in a pool, the other the screen smashed). I ended up buying a S7 on contract, £32PM, free spotify making it £22, SIM only was £15. Making the phone £7PM or £168 and with £60 with quidco. Making the phone £108 for a Samsung S7. Which even in two years I should get at least £50 for. Hard to grumble with that really.

I picked up a Honor 6x from Three today for £199, seems very good for the money and Three's PAYG phones are unlocked so you can pop them onto whatever you like.
Really glad i didn't go for anything more expensive, this honestly has everything i need from a phone.
