French artist living inside a rock surrounded by excrement: 'I feel completely at ease'

Stupid man. It shouldn't irritate me, but it does. I went to the Tate Modern once. What a load of crap. Says it all really when two teenagers pranked them by putting a pair of glasses on the floor and people fell for it, taking photos, like the idiots they are. Then there's the one where a cleaner at an art exhibition threw a bag of rubbish in the bin only to discover later on that it was an art installation.

Don't get me wrong, I love good art, like Salvador Dali for example, but this kind of thing just seems to be called art for the sake of it, and those interested in it seem to only be so because of the social status they think it gives them.

I'll only care if he dies for his art. Otherwise it's just more boondongle pretentiousness pouring out of art colleges that is utterly unimpressive.

I absolutely loathe this kind of thing. I can find absolutely no logic in it whatsoever other than attention seeking so to me this is a load of toss, and anyone who buys into this is also a ******.

There. Generalisation over, what do we think of this?

Bloody disgusting.

Isn't all art attention seeking? Well, at least so much that you want to provoke a reaction in your audience or viewer. The whole 'any idiot could do that' attitude is one I hear a lot but the reality is that almost no one would actually have the conviction to go out and do such a thing.... It is certainly comes easier for us to mock than admire, even if the exercise is ultimately without much point, which may well be the point. Or not.

Good point.

Excellent way of putting it. As soon as the artist exhibits his work, it becomes more about ego then self improvement or expression.

I think you're right. I think the sheer gall of exhibiting such a seemingly pointless piece as an unmade bed is what separates an 'artist' from the average joe, regardless of whether there's a perceived deeper message or not.

Regardless, it all comes down to what we CHOOSE to define as art, and eventually realising how unbelievably stupid and pointless a question that really is when you take into account that all art is principally about context and perception.

I happen to like 'My Bed', as well as a lot of other work from prominent 'modern' artists. Doesn't mean I'm pretentious or intellectually superior, it just means I have different taste. I find it extremely difficult to understand how on earth people could ever get frustrated about someone else self expression... it's like the Rolling Stones vs The Beatles debate. Absolutely pointless.

its all subjective though isnt it?
I dont think this bloke has anything that appeals to me...but somebody must find it interesting

I will go and see to Picasso exhibition at Tate Modern next year...I am not a fan but I do find him interesting...my missus is doing an art history degree so she loves all this stuff

I dont appreciate art I suspect but I appreciate the skill of an artist...Caravaggio painted with such depth and detail its astounding when you view them and think about how old they are

its maybe why I prefer photographic exhibitions, maybe I am a more literal person who wants to see things as they really are rather than as somebody elses interpretation?..it also requires less walking, I must have seen ever bloomin bernini statue in rome!! ( and some of them really are superb..are old sculptures art or history? or both?!?!?)

Surely at risk of DVT set in teh same position for that long?

And besides which, jolly uncomfortable to boot, even driving or meetings for a couple of hours gets uncomfortable sat in one place for too long
