Hi there,

I'm looking to build a PC for my work which involves video and photo editing.

Mainly using Adobe Premiere and PhotoShop with some database management.

Doesn't need to to be ridiculously spec'd but would ideally need to be able to handle editing with no problems at all.

The extent of my knowledge leads me to believe I need to start with a i7 processor with hyper threading and go from there? SSD for live editing projects, HDD for storage would be fine I think.

A middle of the road graphics card would probably be fine too.

Would be looking at a whole system - Including monitor.

Any guidance is much appreciated.

Cheers!

Pending benchmarks AMDs Ryzen is going to be right up your street for your use.

8 cores/16 thread Ryzen CPU, plenty of RAM and an NVME SSD and you'll be laughing.

Interesting. Is there any news on when they will be released? I can only see pre-orders at the moment.

16 threads!? That should handle it I think haha.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely be going with a Ryzen then. The entry level 1700 looks to be ok for what I want to do right?

Also, could I get away with a fairly simple AMD Mobo?

Yeah the 1700 is a steal. If you're not overclocking then a cheap board will be fine. Spend the cash on a decent 32GB RAM kit.

If you are not overclocking then a cheaper board will be fine. They (The cpu's) also come with a stock AMD cooler so you could also save money and use that if you wanted.

I would keep an eye out for reviews as they should be up tomorrow/Fri.

The MSI is mATX or if you want ATX the Asus/Gigabyte are both pretty similar I would imagine.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £290.03
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Nice one, added that MSI mATX to my basket. Are they expected to be released alongside Ryzen?

Is there a bog standard GPU I should be using? Something middle of the road I guess.

A 550W power supply would be fine for a R7 1700 cpu and GTX 1060 or RX 480.

This would save you a few quid and give the same performance.

Launch day is tomorrow so hopefully things will be in stock by then.

There is a pretty good guide here as well regarding Video Editing pc's and the suggested hardware.

It is up to date with Ryzen as well:

If you're not planning on gaming then you should check if your programmes use much GPU acceleration as this firstly will tell you if you need to splash £250 on a GPU and also they often favour AMD/Nvidia so you might need to think about which brand is better for you.

I was going to say, it doesn't sound like you need to spend a lot on a gpu. Those 1600x's are out in a few months as well, that's if you can wait a little while.

Thinking along the same lines for 4K video editing, My current system has a duel display graphic card and I would need one the same for a new 1700x build and my effects software would work better with GPU acceleration.
I would need a decent GPU card any advice there?

Thanks

Hmm watching with interest, very similar to what I'm considering and looks a lot cheaper than going down the laptop route (not to mention more powerful and upgradeable), can anyone comment on how small a case is possible for a Ryzen build?

Op which software will you be using?

Adobe Premiere/PS/AE.

I'm moving over from Mac and FCPX so this is all rather new.

Im assuming AE especially would benefit from some GPU acceleration?

Also, would be considering dual monitors. At home I use a BenQ24XL2411X but having two of these is going to blow the budget out of the water.

Are there some cheaper alternatives that have a 4K resolution?

I'm interested in this also. Would be nice to have a small form factor PC in an office environment.

At the moment, in my basket listed above, I have a midi-tower, could I get smaller than this?
