Thinking of visiting for a long weekend. Any recommendations on where to stay on what to do as well as what to avoid would be appreciated.

Get an airbnb
go to ruin bars
go to the baths
explore/enjoy, 'tis an awesome city

(I've been a bunch of times and not had any trouble, some review websites do mention some of the standard tourist scams apparently on the main shopping street - if some hot girls ask you to come for a drink with them in a bar where the prices are not displayed then use your head... also some city taxes are dodgy - phone for one of the big firms)

Stay centrally or anywhere near one of the Metro lines (the public transport is awesome) I stayed in a hotel way out next to Ferenc Puskas stadium but it's right on the red Metro line I think, and the night bus ran straight past it too. You can easily and cheaply use public transport (Metro & Bus) to get to and from the airport as well (it's a fair way out)

Go to: A spa, as many ruin bars as you can, and if you get a chance go for dinner at Zeller Bistro, I really enjoyed that (reservation essential)

I got back from Budapest two weeks ago after a long weekend with a couple of mates. AirBnB is definitely worth pursuing - it's what we did and were very happy with what we got!

Anyone and everyone will tell you to check out the Ruin Pubs. I'm not an avid beer drinker myself, but I did enjoy the several pubs we went to. There's plenty of usual tourist-type things to do, see the Basilica, museums, Palace etc. We stayed reasonably central and didn't need to use any public transport minus the taxi run from the airport and back!

Also, if you're changing currency, change most of it out there. Most sell rates I found on the UK high street were around 320-330 Forints per pound. Out there was at least 355 at every high street currency exchange. Likewise, try and change back whilst you're there.

Budapest is a wonderful city. I've been there a few times during the winter and am aiming to go back there this summer for a long weekend. It's a great city to stroll around in,just to soak in the athmosphere, culture and architecture. I haven't been out partying that much in Budapest at all but I tend to eat very well there. I find the hungarian food very good and tasty.
I have mostly been staying at hotels on the Pest side, quite central and within walking distance of most touristy areas as well.

And as bJN said, try change most of your money in Hungary as the rates will be quite a bit better (this is the same for most countries actually).

or just use a cashpoint (ideally with a clarity card) and/or spend using your card where it is accepted
