2560x1080 at 75fps. Do I need more than a RX480?

I've been holding off buying a new gpu for a while to wait for Vega, I'm still running a GTX780.

However with all the recent 480 price drops before its rebranded as a 5xx card I've began asking myself if I need Vega.

I've recently (Xmas) got a superwide FreeSync monitor at 2560x1080 that is capable of doing 75fps in FreeSync mode. So obviously I'm keen to switch to AMD, especially seens as my 780 is getting a little long in the tooth.

Can a 480 comfortably run the latest titles at this resolution and frame rate? Or will Vega be required?

I don't want to buy a 480 if it's going to be seriously struggling a year down the line.

Depends your settings.
RX480 is mainly a 1080p card. The memory is too slow for 2560x1440 or higher. Yes it will run, but not at high FPS.
Unfortunately you will be better off if you can buy a FuryX used for around £300, or a Fury (non-X) for around 260-270.
And still expect games like The Division hovering between 55-70 fps at DX12.

Ive just got a RX480 and my monitor is a 1440p freesync.

Everything ive tried so far runs great. Doom 2016, Bioshock Infinite, the last few call of duties and crisis 3. Admitadly not the latest stuff :)

It will do a decent job at that resolution. In terms of render requirements, its partway between 1080p and 1440p in terms of pixels. Take a look at game benchmarks of 1080p and 1440p to get a mid point of sorts for the sort of performance you will get. I have used RX480 paired with a 1440p panel and it does a fine job, no doubt with a less demanding resolution it will do even better. With some of the more demanding titles it will not maintain 75 fps with settings cranked up, but few smart tweaks and turning off the demanding settings and it will run pretty smooth.

I used to have 2560x1080@75hz on a 970 so similar to a 480.

Tbh I would want a better card. Even a year ago the newer games won't get near 75fps.

You will prob end up wanting to upgrade it in no time.

unless you are happy tweaking games and not having them hit 75fps all the time, then you would be fine.

Despite the prices I wouldn't bother with the hassle going from a 780 to a 480. If your keen on amd wait for Vega or go for a 1070. That way you can safely crank all those settings up and enjoy 75fps for the next few years (y)

Thanks guys, think I'll just wait for Vega then. Sadly a 1070 is a no go due to no FreeSync support and therefore I would be capped at 60fps.

I'm running a 1070 on a freesync monitor and there is no screen tearing due to the high fps I'm getting anyway. Runs real smooth..

If you have Nvidia GPU on 144hz freesync monitor then I assume in desktop you set it to 144hz, and in games then it's at 144hz. Your games might not be able to your output 144fps, but if the fps is lower than the refresh, you don't get tearing? It's only when it's the other way round? When you have 100fps but 60hz monitor.

Likewise if you use ATI GPU on 144hz Gysync monitor, same again.

And only having matching then it changes dynamically in game.

Tearing will still be there no matter whether you are running low fps, high fps or lock the fps at your screen refresh rate if no vsync/gsync/freesync.
People who say otherwise either don't notice it or just are trolling.
But yeah it's less noticeable at high fps.

There's no card that can guarantee a blanket 75 fps across the board, I recently tried a 2560x1080 monitor out with my Fury Pro and it did better than I expected so good that I moved up to 3440x1440, A decent 480 is not far off Fury pro performance so it'll give you a perfectly playable experience, Just don't over expect. There will be games that need tweaking and there will be games that don't.

Hmm ok thanks, I guess the 480 will also benefit from better driver support than my 780?

And yes I never thought about making a custom resolution to try nvidia at 75Hz but then I guess I'm still not going to benefit from FreeSync. It's a shame Nvidia don't support it, but that's a whole other argument.

It works great at 1200p with Skyrim even with DoF ENB and Fallout 4 too doesn't even break a sweat. At that res though you might have to compromise on a few things. It depends whats important to you i guess. With Freesync though you won't have to worry about fps drops unless they're really low.
