I want to upgrade, but I probably shouldn't...

it is, but the 1070 has 2 more gb of memory, is newer tech and has warranty left as well which makes it a much better purchase, in my mind anyway :)

Pros and cons with both.

a 980ti could be had between £200 and £250, many will still have warranty, if you can get original receipt or get evga where its fully transferable, then you will be covered for a long time.

a 1070 costs more, if by the time you are spending £300 on one, then you might aswell stretch the extra bit more and go new, which then at the end of the day ends up costing more and way over a £200 budget.

Most aftermarket 980ti's overclock quite well, actually putting them ahead of the 1070 in many instances - that might change with more dx12 stuff (new tech and all) but that is very much an unknown. Right this second, the 980ti offers fantastic bang for buck.

I made the jump from a 7950 to a 1070 and the difference is dramatic! If you can stretch your budget and can find a second hand one I'd highly recommend it, but as mentioned above, a 980ti will be a good shout if you can nab it for your budget as that will also be a massive jump, enough to give you that 'woah factor' :)

I'm old enough to still a little spoiled by the 'woah factor' of going from software rendering to 3D hardware. Going from a 5x86 doing double duty as a GPU to a 3dfx Voodoo handling the 3D graphics was a boggling 'woah factor'. It's not reasonable to expect anything like that now, but I sort of do.

I'm 31 and remember the first time I saw a 3dfx card in action and I agree, that was a big difference, probably one I'll never be as amazed about again, but with the jump from the 7950 to the 1070 when I loaded up GTAV I must admit I did say "wow" to myself, it looks amazing compared to how it looked previously.

Or maybe a nearly new 1070 from someone who gets a serious case of upgraditis and buys a 1080ti.

That'll be me. :D Shame I don't have MM access so it'll be going on fleabay. Only 4 months old too but what the hell. I've just bought a new, well everything really, so may as well go the whole hog and throw a 1080ti in there as well. Just don't tell the missus. :S

i went with a 1070

was between that and a 980ti but as mentioned the 1070 is new tech so will hold value a little letter i hope and hope for better drivers ect with the extra vr headroom also. Managed to get a MSI armor OC edition with 2years and 4 months warranty for £300 local collection so tested before i got it also

480 is twice as powerful as a 7950 for some of the bargins about at moment worth a shout.

1070 is not priced great but probably 3 times as powerful.

@ op If you want a card that will last as long as the 7950 has lasted you, you should go for the 480 as 3, 4 or 5 years from now it'll be pushing hard still while the 1070's performance will be going down.

Just look at the 780ti and 290x today to see the Nvidia effect for yourself.

EDIT:
Whoops I meant to see the negative effect for yourself :)

a 480 will never be close to a 1070 even in 5 years time.:p
It shouldn't no but 2 years ago we'd of said the same thing about the 960 never beating a 780ti but in Bf1 and others it does. That's that gen's flagship with the preceding gen's low end.
With Pascal still not being a true DX12/Vulcan architecture I'm expecting more of the same as the games advance and newer Nvidia tech releases..
