Hi all! I am looking to upgrade my computer from an Intel i7 920 at 4ghz with 6 gb of ram to something faster. I have looked into Kaby lake and Ryzen and as all I do on the computer is play games I feel that the i7 is more suited to me for now. I would like this upgrade to last me 3 to 4 years ideally.

I already have the other components needed such as a Nvidia 980ti and a corsair 750 watt power supply (this is 5 years old, still ok?) I will keep my current coolermaster haf x case. Is the below spec I have configured all ok? I am wanting to stay around the £700 mark if possible.

If I intend to overclock to 4.8 ghz will the cooler i chose be adequate or overkill? I'm looking for a quiet cooler compared to the titan fenrir I have now which is very loud!

Thanks :)

The cooler is massive and the RAM is tall, might not be a good combo.

Also the Gigabyte Gaming K5 has a 4yr warranty and Creative X-fi emulation on the audio.

Thanks for the replies. I'll go for the k5 motherboard then. The x fi emulation should mean I don't need to use my x fi extreme music sound card I currently have? What would you recommend for a cooler? I've never built a computer before so this will be the first time I've done it. Would the cooler master haf x take an aio cooler like the h100i recommended easily?

Thanks

Scroll to the very bottom and it shows that the roof can accept coolermaster 240mm AIOs so that means it should take any other 240mm AIO.

Not sure about the sound card, I had one ages ago and at the time it was the shizzle, I would hope onboard sound on higher end boards have caught up and passed it by now. Also the sound card is PCI? these newer boards dont have those anymore.

That's great. I'll watch some videos of how to install an aio to the case. This is the only part that worries me about the build. If I didn't decide to go for an aio are there any other coolers you'd recommend? Oh yes I didn't think about if the sound card would fit or not, I just assumed it did. I did get it 11 years ago nearly so I guess onboard sound is superior now :)

I'm not against changing the ram to something else if that helps? The case seems like hard work to fit a radiator to. I might possibly look at getting a new case like the Corsair 750d or maybe a mid size case this time. My haf x has a few broken parts on it anyway so it might be a good idea for a change.

Thanks for your replies so far. I really appreciate your help!

Corsair vengeance ram is common, available in a few colours and low profile.

Phantek cases are also excellent for fitting radiators.

I will look at changing the ram to corsair vengeance too. I'm looking at the Phanteks enthoo evolv atx case. I'm watching a build on YouTube that someone made and the case looks superb. I'm thinking if I just get what he uses all I need to do is copy what he does step by step lol. My budget seems to be flying out the window!

Here is a few pics of the Dark Rock Pro 3 sitting on a K5 board just so you can see how big it really is,

:eek: Good lord that is enormous.. I'm looking at the corsair h100i and the phanteks evolv atx case, the case is beautiful but will I miss having an optical drive? I haven't used mine in a while so I would think not but it's a shame to lose it. Do you think it's wise to get a new power supply? My corsair one is probably 5 years old and I read the internals of it start to deteriorate after time. If I really need one I will get one but it'd be nice to save some money!

I would think the PSU is ok, is it a TX750? If so they are good quality inside.

I also haven't used an optical drive for well over a year now, the only thing I would like to do is burn a CD full of mp3 for my car's CD/radio player.

Apart from that I don't miss it.

It's the hx750. I'll have a think about the power supply for now but the rest seems good to go! Eventually I will upgrade the hard drives and ssd to something better. Thanks for all the help and hopefully I won't be having to ask for advice on how to put it all together haha.

Should swap for the tempered glass version of the case mate it's lovely!

The tempered glass version does look nice but its an extra £16 and I won't be looking into the case too often so I thought I could save a bit of money :). My original budget for this upgrade was £700 haha. Oops!

How come you didn't reuse your Corsair power supply ? The Corsair HX750 is a good solid psu.

I have had it for 6 years after checking and I have seen a few people say that around this point it might be deteriorating slightly, at least I have peace of mind now incase anything should happen. Another factor was that I don't need to remove the old psu from my Haf X and I can leave that computer fully built (excluding graphics card and hard drives).
