£2000-£2500 on a spectacular monitor set-up and powerful PC

Follow-up:
When under heavy-load (Fallout 4 @ 4K with Ultra settings), the PC makes an incredible whining sound. It's like a cat made of digital screeching at me as if I'm strangling it.

"Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa~!"

I feared it would be this 'coil whine' I both hear, and hear so much about, from my (so far, beloved) GTX 1080. I also heard a rumour on the street that it may be caused by the PSU.

I pulled the PSU out as far as I could, to move it away from the GPU, so I had better audible separation between the two, to isolate the source of the whine. It's the PSU. The 1080 does, in fact, have a whine of its own, but it's so minute I can only hear it with the case off and my ear right next to the card when it's under full-blast load.

The PSU is a seven year-old 750W Antec TruePower Bronze.

The PC is the one in the basket listed above, and has four mechanical hard drives installed, also.

I was planning to add a second GTX 1080 later-on (when they come down in price) and SLI them (never done that before, and want to try it out, hehe~), but the enormous racket it's making with just the one card is making me think this PSU isn't up to the job. The box the power supply came in said it was 'NVidia SLI Ready Certified', as well!

I'm guessing I can't blame this on the graphics card, and will need a new PSU. I had a look and was impressed by this one: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cougar-gx-v3-1050w-80-plus-gold-modular-power-supply-ca-025-cu.html

I don't mind spending a bit of money on a good power supply, but I've already gone over-budget and don't really want to spend £250 on a PSU! :)

Does anyone have any recommendations (or advice)? I tried disabling all that C1E & C3/C6 stuff in the BIOS that used to cause squeaks, and forcing V-Sync on and capping the FPS, but no improvement.

Depends how badly you want to sli, two 1080's will demand not just power, but a high quality power supply, or you might end up with coil whine again, so I'd think I'd go with something better.

The other option is stay with a single card and a slightly lower power unit of better quality, and then just get a new high end gpu in a year or two.

There are plenty of benchmarks out there just have a look to see whether SLI scales with the games you'd like to play and decide from there.

Hi, everyone~

Yeah, I've had a good look at benchmarks; SLI is definitely a possibility for me in the future, so buying a good PSU now seems like a smart move.

If that Cougar 1050W Gold is a bit cheap-o~, how about:

This 'Fractal Design' 1000W Platinum PSU, only £149.99:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/frac...-platinum-modular-power-supply-ca-069-fd.html

Or, alternatively, this 'Super Flower' 1000W Platinum PSU, a bargain at just £189.95:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...us-platinum-power-supply-black-ca-006-sf.html

Both the companies that make those have really funny names, so I'm cool with them.

Are these more the sort-of PSUs I should be looking at?

I didn't think high-performance computing would be this expensive :-\.

Yes. I suggest you buy a good low power PSU now - 450W should be fine - and upgrade should you implement SLI. OCUK sell 460W and 500W silent PSUs.

Ah right, OK~. I assumed the whining was because I was... 'exceeding the capabilities' of the wattage, and of the 'metaphorical metal'...

Good to know I can save some money.

I had a go with one of those 'PSU wattage calculators' on the Internet, and it recommended me 550W with one 1080, and 700W with two. Taking into account your suggestions above, it leaves me wondering~...

A Super Flower 550W Gold @ £69.95:
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...0-plus-gold-power-supply-black-ca-003-sf.html

A 650W variant of the above, just £79.95:

A 750W variant of the above, currently £86.95:

And if you don't like Super Flower, a 'be quiet!' 700W Silver unit, significantly discounted to £79.99:

Well~, I'm guessing the 550W one would be perfectly fine; it's just tempting to spend another ten or twenty pounds if it means not having to buy another PSU later-on if I add another card.

my first 970 used to give me a touch of coil whine under certain circumstances but when I changed my PSU it vanished so yea a good quality PSU can make all the difference.

I went for the XFX XTR which I was recommended and was told its based on a seasonic unit.

Ive ended out with a second one in my oldest lads system as well and both have been trouble free.

I bought an XFX 750w which is a subsidary of seasonic. and am lead to believe both very high quality.

I don't game too much, but I have a GTX 580 which I got cheap off a mate, I get whine when running the tomb raider "hair" demo.
Worth noting my previous PSU which was running a GTX460 just fine would shutdown when running with the 580
everything else seems to be fine.

The same mate recently donated a GTX680 but I haven't had a chance to install and test it yet.
and test it yet.

XFX just use Seasonic to manufacture their units (Apart from the XFX XT). I don't think there is any link between them otherwise.

Thanks everyone~!

I bought this Super Flower 750W Gold PSU for a reasonable £86.99, and my friendly~ DPD driver delivered it today.

Plugged it in; Fallout 4 @ 4K Ultra has no whine :).

Plus, since I have a 'Full ATX' case with two PSU bays in it, I can always put the old one back in (as long as I'm gentle with it) for mega~ super~~ extra~~~ 1500W rockin' power :) :rockinoutsmiley:.
