Plans to increase National Insurance levels for self-employed people - announced in the Budget last week - have been dropped.

Chancellor Philip Hammond has said the government will not proceed with the increases which were criticised for breaking a 2015 manifesto pledge.

In a letter to Tory MPs, he said: "There will be no increases in... rates in this Parliament."

Mr Hammond will explain the U-turn in a Commons statement later.

am i missing something here? i was of the understanding that all it was doing was making the self employed pay the same % of national insurance as other workers.

seemed only fair to me tbh.

Not necessarily, workers on PAYE get a lot more benefits than those that are self employed, a lower rate of N.I isnt the worst thing

Yes, even then they weren't going to be paying the same.

Wasn't the change going to be introduced over a 3 year period ending in 2020?

The only caveat he's added is that the changes won't be in this parliament. So come 2020 onwards they'll be introduced.

I'm now concerned about from whence Our Glorious Leaders are planning to claw back the money they thought they were going to get from the NI increase...
Although the poor, the sick and the disabled and those in society that do not have a voice no matter how many politicians tell us different are the likely candidates.

This is exactly where they will be looking to find the money now.

Perhaps they could also cancel Brexit whilst they're at it.

Never going to get anything done if they give in like that. I wonder which of the spending promises they will drop now.

this is what gets me, they've basically got no opposition and they're still too spineless to actually DO anything. Don't get me wrong i don't want them to increase taxes for people but don't say you will and then pussy out of it at the slightest backlash when they've basically got carte blanche to do whatever they want due to Corbyn being so utterly useless. It's probably the least capable government we've ever had.

The budget was an utter travesty anyway, with a big fat nothing in it to promote active travel.

Might as well just rip it up and start again.
