Is my SSD on the way out?

Hey guys,

I have a little issue here

I had a problem before I formatted, that when loading something, the computer would freeze as if loading for a few seconds, the mouse cursor was still working and all, then would return to normal.

I formatted after everything was setup, and it was fine for a little while there, but i believe the issue is now back. even though the issue are not too frequent.

I have a cheap brand ssd 120gb that i have had for almost a year now. so i think it must be that or the processor?

Even thought the CPU is brand new, and has no issues in game or otherwise, so im thinking it is likely the former?

can someone please shed some light on this for me. Thanks.

update -

think its my processor guys, as when it stalls for a short period, and i check Afterburner, the usage jumps for idle to around 45-50C and the usage on some cores. then dies back down. does that sound CPU or SSD to you?

Have you analysed whether its some software or process hogging the CPU during these spikes?

I doubt it's a cpu or thermal issue as it would be hot all the time.

Thankyou for the reply mate..

I was thinking if for example I was opening Spotify, or loading a web page, it seems to have a stutter / freeze and then return to normal. And I think that maybe the spike of the cpu is compensating for the lack of instant loading and so ramps up for those few seconds? Does that make sense?

I wouldn't think so, someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but in a scenario when a cpu is sat waiting for instructions, it might stutter but it wouldn't ramp up usage or temperature as it's essentially idle and waiting for something to do.

I think it's a software issue, keep task manager open and have a look what's going on when it judders.

If that doesn't reveal anything, put some more better event logging on.

Ahh.. Sometimes, quite often, windows will load workable drivers as part of Windows update.

It is however prudent to manually update drivers for key components, motherboard chipset drivers and graphics card drivers most notably.

Down load and install these directly from the vendors website, nvidia, amd, Asus, msi, etc.

Also if you have a fancy mouse or keyboard you might want to look into updating drivers for them too as above.

But motherboard and gpu drivers are probably what to update first, windows does a reasonable job of making things work, but that's pretty much it, they might well be out of date and missing various optimisations.

As mentioned, have a look on Task Manager and see what is drawing resources. I had a similar problem and found my SSD with running at 100% usage - had to change a few settings and a registry entry to get it working properly.

Hardware failure is a lot less common than software mate. When you hear hooves on the road think horses not Zebras.

You don't say what your processor is ? If its an Intel then head to their website to download their Processor diagnostic tool. You can do the same for the SSD as most reputable companies have a program which will be able to tell you the status of the SSD dive.

I have a 7700K CPU.

just for reference, today I have been playing BF1 and browsing the web etc...now the problem re-arises..all was fine, till around 20mins ago..

I have just started downloading from steam (TW2) and now, when browsing through cars on ebay, when i scroll through the lists fast, there is stuttering and the cpu temp and usage rises..it there a problem in that respect, i mean, i just playing a BF1 match and had, good temps, good FPS and no lagging etc..

Just had a big freeze there. FML.

Going to do diagnostics like you said, on the ssd and cpu. Will report back with findings...

Cheers.

Did you update the motherboard and gpu drivers?
yes, i didnt know where to start with the motherboard drivers, so i done the chipset. and gpu are up do date, just done a diagnostic on the CPU and it PASSED!

is there a program i can use to update the drivers by searching my system and seeing what i need for my motherboard? or do i have to download ALL like 50 updates for it?
