oak door finish

I'm also looking at the Howdens doors and I'm about to order. Are you able to share how much you paid for them? Even if just by trust.

I'm also looking for somebody to install them. Did you install them yourself psd99?

these doors are PRICEY but you get what you pay for tbh. They cost me approx £150 + each door. (uer i know that price adds up) then around here in the london area it can be between £50 to £75 to fit each door.

I'm sure up in wigan it be cheaper though to get a door installed.

If you are looking for quality doors for your own place then these are the right ones for you. They look lovely and feel very strong.

yep but it is conflicting reading about this on the net

many have actually used osmo oil on these exact same doors
but then why would the manufacturer write that?!

I used clear matt Osmo top oil on mine, which are Howdens Dordogne. Apparently as you say they don't recommend oils in case they affect the veneer adhesive, but apparently this is a legacy arse-covering thing and modern manufacturing methods mean there's very little risk of this actually happening.

Osmo oil is actually sanctioned by Howdens as safe with their veneered doors though. You're right that some of their bumph says 'don't use oils or waxes', but if you look at the main website for the Dordogne door, it says Osmo oil is OK. I've saved a screen print of this just in case! Check the second bullet point on the right:

Good post, I thought it would just be them covering themselves.

my door frames are satin but why did one of you favour semi matt?

Its very much down to personal taste. If you do decide to go with Osmo you can buy small tester pots to try out on a bit of scrap oak to see what you like best. If you want to same sheen as the frames then satin is probably a better choice. Semi matt would be a very slight sheen and gives a more unfinished look, which I think looks great on Oak.

At first I was wondering why the doors were so expensive but then I realised it's because they're fire doors. I will just be getting standard internal doors which are under half of that price.

As for fitting I've been quoted £45-50 at the moment so yes, sounding a bit cheaper.

I've already bought Eclipse hinges and tubular latches a bit like these:

Why would you put anything on a veneer? Isn't that the point in them? You don't need to touch them?
A veneer is just a thin slice of timber, you still need to seal and protect it like you would with solid timber. The point of it is to get the look of solid timber, but without the price tag. Plus it has other benefits like less movement than solid timber when glued to a man made substrate.

We had Howdens Worcester doors fitted last summer and used 3 coats of Ronseal Interior Varnish Quick Dry Satin Clear and they still look as good as new now.
