Hi guys

Mrs is after a new (used) car

Her budget is £12000 to buy or to lease around £220 a month max. (She rather own it than lease)

Must be 2012 or newer and max 40,000 miles

Petrol or diesel

She wants to keep it 4-5 years

Cars we have looked at so far and she likes are:

BMW 1 series, Audi A1, Audi TT, VW Scirroco

I would like her in a 1 series m sport however don't they have timing chain issues at this age?

Timing chain does seem to be a problem on some German cars, Audis can be a pain for it (among other things).

But it's a shame you can't go a couple of grand higher, could have a GT86/BRZ for the coupe option. They won't break :D

They are fine cars, sure they don't set the world alight with performance or razor sharp handling, but as a "looks good, built well" car they sell well and hold their value well for a reason. The biggest problem you'll have is that as you say £12,000 is quite a lot to drop on a model that is essentially the same as it was in 2007 (with the underpinnings of an A3 that was available in 2003), and you'll either have to put up with the rather cruddy (by modern standards) RNS-E satnav system, or fit something aftermarket.

You'd have to have upwards of £20k to get into the current model (to own outright), and I think you'll end up needing more than £220/month to get into one via a lease anyway.

I'm afraid if the missus has already given you a shortlist of 1 car, that's what you are going to end up with.

Thanks

I should be able to talk her out of it

I know it's too much for a 2007 design, and that old nav is garbage too

If you go for the mk2 TT and want nav then remember it can be retrofitted quite easily for £500 or even less.

Also look for the latest RNS-E that's GT a gloss black screen surround, which is also a lot higher res than the old version (which had a Matt bezel).

She's a wannabe snob

Wants a car with a nice badge
Then get whatever badge she wants in her favourite colour and on the latest plate possible.

I never get these threads "I would like her in a 1 series m sport", "I should be able to talk her out of it". Unless it is your money then why do you even care? Even if it is your money unless you are going to be driving it why can't she just have what she wants anyway?

Well when you care about someone you also care they are getting a good deal

I don't want her paying over the odds for a old model and year
