New 1080 G1 Gaming fans issue

Well I couldn't resist Friday's price for upgrading my 970 to a Gigabyte 1080 G1 Gaming...

Card was delivered on Sunday and performance is astounding - BF1 on ultra @1440p is smooth as butter.

But I have a problem with the fans either on my card or PC. Everything is silent when just browsing but as soon as a game is loaded up (tested with BF1 and R6 Siege so far), the fans sound like they are going into overdrive. Of course some noise is to be expected, however I'd put it at twice as loud as my 970 (Galax). It really is like the proverbial plane taking off.

I checked HW Monitor and temps are all very good; 45-60. The G1 fans were going up to about 50% so God knows what they would be like at full chat.

Anyway, the noise when gaming is not even the biggest issue, it's the fact that the fans don't disengage when I quit out of the game and go back to desktop - I have to restart the PC for them to come back to idle.

To throw a spanner in the works, even though the fans are still span up when I'm on desktop after playing a game, HW Monitor tells me they are coming down to 0% on the card. So I check the Sys and CPU fans and HW Monitor tells me they are still spinning (around 1500 RPM up to 1800 RPM). I'm positive its the 1080 still spinning though as it is a new sound (I kind of know the sound of my case/CPU fans).

Can HW Monitor get this wrong?

I guess I need to take the case cover off and inspect visually to see what is still spinning (which I'll do tonight), but I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on what the problem might be here. Not necessarily the high noise when gaming as I can live with that if I have to (disappointing considering I read it was a quiet card), but the fact that the fans aren't coming back to idle when on desktop - either the card fans or the CPU/Sys fans.

I tried playing with Speedfan and have no clue what I'm doing. I'd prefer to not cook the new 1080 by cocking up with that so left it alone.

I can post HW Monitor/Speedfan screen shots tonight if that helps.

Sorry for such a long post but any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Btw, I'm running an i7 2600k (no overclock at moment as I'm struggling to get the OCUK profile working without issues), 8GB, and a Corsair 550w PSU. I expect some will say the PSU is marginal but considering the posted specs for the card it should be fine and even so, I can't see how these symptoms would be from an under performing PSU (I could be wrong of course!).

I have the G1 gaming 1080 and it is very good. When in gaming, I can hear the fans but I would expect that with any GPU but they are not obtrusive. One way you can check what is what is run MSI Afterburner and keep setting the fans at several intervals like I have done in this vid.

Thanks Gregster. It's subjective, but my fans seem to be spinning up immediately to sound like your 80-100% range the second a game loads (not menu screen but in-game). This is when HW Monitor reports 45-50% on fan usage, which makes me think that percentages/rpms are being reported wrong as it really does sound like it's going hell for leather.

I haven't yet updated the bios and it's a bit out of my experience zone so hadn't planned to. Will have a look into it though.

If anyone has any other thoughts on why the fans aren't disengaging when I quit to desktop it would really help. Bare in mind that it 'could' be the case fans that are still spinning not the gfx card as that's what HW Monitor says - however, this has never happened before and I just have a feeling it's the card - will look inside tonight to check of course.

Thanks

Did you fully uninstall the GPU drivers before installing the new card? I know from experience that the drivers contain fan profiles so this could be related.

I would check for vira as well. Some vira starts a coin mining process which maxes out gpu usage so fans would likely be spinning high as well.

No probs and mine was the very first batch and I have not flashed any bios's onto it at all, so I would be very surprised if it was that. A good call on DDU though and worth a try and last resort is the bios but it could well be a faulty card .

Re a virus, I can't see it considering there was no issue with my previous card, but I will do an ad-hoc scan just in case!

And a waterblock might just be above my skill level, but maybe one day :)

It sounds like something is making the fan go at 50% when it thinks it's 0% and 100% when it thinks it's at 50% fan speed.

I have 2 G1's and they are pretty quiet and performance has been great.

Sounds like a faulty fan controller, the fans should not spin up to 80% and remain that high until restart.

to rule out software ; Install afterburner, and test fan speeds like Greggster did. Could it be possible that your old 970 custom fan profile or settings have overwritten your new cards settings via a 3rd party app such as afterburner / precision x?

Morning all, thanks for your comments and suggestions yesterday.

I started off with a clean driver install last night and that didn't fix it. Before I got into the more complicated stuff I thought I'd go back to basics first, so opened the case up and pulled the card out and put it back in. Which has fixed the problem!

It's now so quiet when gaming and the fans spin down properly when I'm finished. I don't know what the problem was. I thought maybe a stray plug or cable had been causing an obstruction on one of the fans causing the others to go mad, so I have since got the cable ties out and tidied things up a bit.

Anyway, as it stands, this card really is amazing, especially now the fans work properly and it sounds exactly as it should in a game (hardly any fan noise at all). Temps are all fine too.

Again, thanks for all the help :)
