Car keyed: Options?

That'd just being pedantic, capturing someone walking down their garden path at the edge of the frame (For example) is hardly branching somebody else's privacy or using CCTV irresponsibily
Exactly. It's a *massive* grey area and it's much more an issue for public institutions than private individuals.

A private home owner who has been burgled in the past, putting up CCTV watching over their driveway whilst capturing a small amount of the street and pavement has *nothing* to worry about. If you read through the ICOs advice, they rarely categorically say something is illegal and even if it was - who is going to take you to court? They just try and advise people to not put CCTV up unless necessary to stop any potential complaints about harassment etc.

Bringing this back to the original mentioning of this issue - no police officer in the land, or court, would question the CCTV footage of someone being caught committing an offence, as long as it wasn't zoomed into their living room.

You're right, no sane person would even try to make a court case from this. I was thinking more about my mates troubles tbh, his camera twisted slightly to the right would have saved him a lot of bother

Anyway, hope the OP gets some justice for what the moron did to his car

CCTV anywhere is fine I think, your allowed to film in public. It's the recording of sound that can be an issue. When we installed it at work that was the thing we had to watch legally.

I would confront the woman and tell her you have cctv, if she doesn't cover the cost of the repair you will take it to the police.

Some people get very funny about people parking in "their" spot

OI9EmjK.png

That happened in my home town, quite amusing tbh, most people thought it was because of the value the We Buy Any Car office was offering them tipped the owners over ;)

there has been quite a spate a invalidism though, kids going around in gangs slashing tyres some people have had all 4 done twice now, windows being bricked, one whole road had their tyres slashed, unfortunately with less police i can only guess it will get worse.

Ever heard an actual explanation? never seen one - people I work with joke that it was someone's "spot" but no one actually knows what happened. I was up Babylon Hill way the day after the first one happened and it literally looked like someone had picked the car up and swung it around like a cat damaging cars all around before putting it down.

No idea, the first i could imagine just being some idiots dumping it, but the Fiesta next to the other car looked placed, there was a Rolls or Bently parked right next to it with no damage.

It's the same where I live, we are close to a hospital and people park there to avoid the astronomical charges per hour.

My neighbours go mental when they can't park within 2m of their own door, aways moaning and having talks about phoning the police, criminal damage, reporting them to the council et al - one even takes pictures of the "offending" cars every day and emails them to some poor chap at the council- I just calmly say we don't own the road, it's not illegally parked and there it nothing wrong with it.

Ironically the main moaner is the bloke with 5 camper vans all parked on his own driveway.

People can be an odd lot when it comes to "my space" and "my road" etc

The annoying thing is these crimes aren't even investigated any more. If you look at the UK crime map, almost all reported crimes seem to be closed almost immediately with "no evidence". People robbing and vandalising seem to have free reign to do whatever they like. In a small area/town it's probably the same bunch of people getting away with it constantly :/

A little update, I went to give a statement yesterday and the officer asked me to provide the full length footage from when I arrived in the street until I leave showing that no one else walks past the car on the side that was damaged, hopefully I can get this tonight, they also wanted to see footage of my drive way CCTV from when I come home until the next morning when I see the damage to show it was not done overnight on the drive. I was also asked to provide a quote for the repair which I got today (£432).

I will update as and when I hear anything.

asking a lot, guess the only way to prove it eh.

You should by law, have a sign stating that there is active CCTV on the property. With it either being commercial or residential.

I'n not sure you need signs for residential property. Only places of work and those which have public access.

If you ever need to rely on footage captained by the CCTV for it to stand up in court, adequate signs would have needed to be displayed even on domestic property. Doesn't have to be a post planted in the front garden with a 2 foot sign on it :p small one in the corner of the front door would suffice.

Hope something gets done about this !

Really dont get why people would do this. Or why people think they own the street their house is on. Eurghhhh .

"I'm afraid we can't use this clear evidence from your camera system of the person's face 3 feet from your camera as they steal your car because you didn't have any signs up on your property warning him that a camera system is in use"
"Mr. Thief you're free to go"

Well where you live you could probably shoot them, which would be a much better option.

Sounds good. I'm guessing the CCTV doesn't actually show the neighbour damaging your car then? If it does, there would be no need for all the other CCTV footage. I'm reckoning she'll say that she didn't realise she scratched your car and she must have done it accidentally to negate intention *and* the reckless part of it.

A) You only need to display signs if you are capturing areas outside of your property.
B) No one cares if you display signs and no one would ever check.
C) If you captured something on your CCTV from a public street and you didn't have signage up - it absolutely would still be admissible as evidence in court.
