Upgrade from 970gtx to 1080 or 1080ti?

Thinking about upgrading my 970gtx, getting a bit jealous of people running 1080's. I play a lot of MMO's mainly black desert atm.

I have 2 dilemma's atm:
1080 or 1080ti? .... and if I buy either one, ideally I would want to go for a 1440p monitor....

With the price of monitors with Gsync and the price of a 1080ti it would easily push over £1000. So I'm kinda split in my mind on what to do. would a 1080 be enough for 1440? or is it a silly idea when the 1080ti is just around the corner?

Current Specs:
Intel i7-5820K 3.30GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor @4.0GHZ
Asus TUF X99 Sabertooth Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C14 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Samsung 840 Evo 120gb SSD
Samsung 850 Evo 500gb SSD
Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply
AOC G2460PQU 24" Widescreen 144Hz 1ms Gaming LED Monitor
Fractal Design Define S Midi Tower Case
Noctua NH-D15S Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler

1080 is great at that res, its what its made for and it puts a 1440p gsync I.P.S. in range at that budget.

Budget 1080, £480. gsync I.P.S £600. Monitor will outlive the card so worth investing in.

im 100% sure a gtx 1080 will be just fine for MMOs you play, 1080 ti might be overkill cause im sure MMOs are mostly CPU intensive if anything

cheers for the replies.

yeah MMO's are very CPU intensive. I know for a fact with my stock 3.3ghz i noticed a big drop in FPS compared to my 4ghz O/C

do you think the 1080 will drop anymore in price when the 1080ti's are around more?

They may particularly if A.M.D fights hard on price with new cards. Certainly a good chance.

Would be nice to see a price drop on monitors. Gsync premium is excessive. Hopefully they are ripe for a tumble in price or at least the chance to pick one up on offer at some point.

Keep a close eye on short term offers and deals for both card and monitor. With some luck you just might nudge under the £1000 mark.

Ahhhh..... and here's me waiting for Vega, when in reality I'm far more comfortable with Nvidia!
1070 now or wait for Vega is my dilemma.

Well the R390 was the first AMD card I had ever purchased and used. This was only because my budget at the time, allowed for either the 970 or R390, and I felt the R390 was the better card.
It performed well (went from GTX750/1080 to the R390/1440) so saw a huge improvement in my experience, same again with this step.

I was going to wait to see what AMD Vega had to offer, but with the lack of news and having the funds available I decided a move back to team green was right for me.

We are pretty close tho. It could be that AMD at least paper launch it along with Bethesda's Prey on PC. That's due in May.

If only I knew if Vega was worth waiting for. If it's just 1070/1080 levels of performance well then I'd rather go Green. BUT if they can do with Vega what they've done with Ryzen, then it could be worth waiting for.

Thing I like about AMD is they are bringing enthusiast class features (some thing that Intel and Nvidia make you pay an arm and a leg for) and make it consumer class. Which I think is fantastic, as if Intel and Nvidia had their way we'd all have expensive quad cores from Intel and £500 1080p cards from Nvidia! :p

The issue with AMD is it takes them a long time to get their act together!

----

For example, you could build an 8Gb GPU based, 8/16 core CPU AMD PC and it wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

If you want the same from Intel/Nvidia it'll be 2-3 times as expensive for the full build.

Best guess on what little (next to nothing) is known puts Vega somewhere between 1080 - 1080ti was my understanding.

That been said, for me, price would be the factor in deciding what to buy.

Lets just hope they have learnt their lesson from various unfortunate launches in the past.
