Hi folks.

In the midst of upgrading my GPU and Monitor.

What combination is going to look and feel better for gaming?

I have GTX 1080 and a Dell 27" 4K IPS. It looks amazing but I'm getting tearing.

Would it look better to get a lower resolution monitor with higher refresh rate?

Depends on the game I find.

For example, on mine, Forza is best at 100fps+ @ Ultra everything, so I play it on my Dell, however Star Trek online looks far better at 4K so I play it on my AOC.

i run a GTX 1080 and game at 144hz but 1080p... honestly it struggles in many scenarios to chug along above 100fps even at that res. Granted, I like to max game settings out.....
If you are wanting 4k or 1440p 144hz I would have to recommend the Ti variant of the card where I guess the combination of 144hz and 1440p would be realised to its fullest

I have a 100hz IPS 1440p monitor and the experience over 60hz is amazing. I don't have any form of g sync or free sync, and the response time is apparently 8ms but I love it. Good thing about high refresh rate is that if you get a tear, it's on screen for far less time so is far less distracting.

GTX 1080 tears through games with this res and refresh rate. Many games are fine at fully maxed settings, others I just turn down to high. Imo high = ultra when actually playing the game.

I went from a 27" 1440p ips (albeit 90hz) to a 40" 4k phillips (same pixel density just more screen space) and would not go back, you just need the gpu grunt to drive it at decent frames.

I'm a huge fan of 1440p 144hz. 4k is essentially a commitment to always having to have top tier XX80 graphics cards if you want to drive everything at max settings. 1440p can easily be ran by XX70 series cards and seems to save a lot of cash in the long run. If you combine 1440p 144hz with Gsync you get the best of all worlds. Super high frame rates for older games, but smooth playable gameplay all the way down to 40fps on stuff that is pushing your GPU to the max.

Still rocking 1080p 144hz, don't game that much anymore just old quake/quake 3 and Poe. Don't want to go bigger then 24" so that my future options.

I'd be checking why if I were you. The 1080 should annihilate everything at 1080p, assuming your cpu and ram are up to the task.

it happily hammers anything really at 60fps. Asking to do it all at 144hz is another story however. Ghost recon is a prime example, that sucker sits at 70-100 fps.
