Some recent photos from the big screen adaption of Stephen King's Dark Tower series -

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1648190/mediaindex?ref_=tt_pv_mi_sm

I've read the books and I'm intrigued as to what will make it into the movie and what will be cut in the interests of plot / pacing etc as well as the casting of the main characters. It's difficult to think they can do the overall arc of the books justice but because of them its still in my top 5 films to see this year.

Having read The Stand and then 11.23.63 as my introduction to Stephen King, I was really excited to read the Gunslinger. I have to say I found it utterly boring though. I'm not convinced by Idris Elba (if he speaks with his accent it will be laughable, surely?). Hmn.

In the film, Roland has the Horn of Eld....

Hope you didn't just stop at 'The Gunslinger' - it is pretty much the prequel novella to the whole series!

Serious question. I genuinely found it boring.
You're not alone. I forced my way to the end, but it was like beating my head against a wall... great when it finally stopped! I had no interest in finding out what happened next to anyone or anything.

Apart from that it was ok, I suppose! :-) I do try to keep an open mind though. I avoided Game of Thrones for years because it was 'too popular and therefore trash'. So I'm prepared to eat large portions of humble pie in some circumstances, which is why I struggled through to the end of Gunslinger.

I like the look of this. I'm a big Edris fan. Didn't really get along with the books, I think it was the 800 page flashback in Wizard and Glass that bored me. Over the years I've meant to give them another go but never did. I suppose I could Audible on my commute. I'll see if this movie gets me exited about the books.

I did. Does it get more exciting? Serious question. I genuinely found it boring.

Trailer looks great though..

The other books have a verrrry different feel. Would suggest at least trying the second book and seeing how you go. Imo it is one of the most unique non-traditional fantasy series out there and an extremely enjoyable read.

The last few books were definitely up and down. I was far too invested by that point to give up though. Some pretty moving moments towards the end :o

I'm not sure on the trailer. I know plenty of aspects of the books wouldn't translate well to film/tv but still..hmmm. I'm hoping it'll be another GoT though. Hoping, not expecting.

hmm, not sure about that - seems to be a lot of footage of the tower when at this point they should be nowhere near it, and that stuff about the tower falling will unleash hell is cheesy and nothing to do with the book.

I read (can't remember which site though) that this is based after the end of the last book in the series, so effectively at the start of another of the Gunslinger's loops.

Just added a spoiler warning to the title. Once the series starts we should probably have a separate thread.

@SirJinks - I think I've seen that suggested too, given that he has the Horn of the Eld on him.
