Hi all,

I recently bought an MSI 1080 Ti GamingX but am having problems with the PC shutting down. The thing runs hot, really hot! So much so that my entire case was very warm to the touch. I have what i would consider decent air flow. 2 fans on the front as intakes, 1 on the top, 1 on the back as exhausts. The slightly strange thing is, the GPU hovers around the 75 mark under load, but the card as a whole is extremely warm. To the point where you can't touch the backplate its that hot. Another thing i am slightly confused about is the GPU clock. I installed Afterburner to monitor temps and the GPU clock ingame is 1949Mhz. I was under the impression it boosts to 1657Mhz? I haven't overclocked or played with any settings, everything is completely stock. In an effort to try keep things cool, ive been running with my case sides off and even limited the FPS ingames which makes the GPU use only 60% underload. Even with this, i still experience the PC shutting down. Do you think this is a returns job?

PC Stats for reference:
7700k with Corsair H80i v2 cooler
Corsair HX1000 PSU
MSI Z170 SLI Mobo

Many thanks

75C is a low temperature and is perfectly safe.

The cooler is supposed to get warm, that shows that it's doing it's job. Backplates are usually hot to touch on high end cards, some manufacturers even have warming stickers on them to discourage people touching them etc.

Remember that the MSI Gaming X version of the 1080ti is a 280W+ TDP card. That's a lot of heat, which has to go somewhere.

The 1900Mhz clock you see is NVIDIA's automatic overclock - otherwise known as 'GPU Boost 3.0'. In short, it will push the card as high as it can if the cooling/power delivery is satisfactory. It nets you greatly improved performance.

Many thanks for your reply. What would you suggest then with regards to the PC shutting down even when the GPU is only showing 60% usage?

Check that the heat is not adding to your CPU temps to much, have a look in the bios to see the shutdown temperatures are, and if they are to low change them.

Sorry, completely missed that point when I read your post.

As Rossiboy suggests, I'd suspect the CPU. Do you have an overclock running? If so, try it at stock (along with memory speed at stock) just to see if this fixes it. If it does, then it means your previous CPU overclock is now unstable, due to the extra heat emitted by your monster GPU.

Ive only had the 7700k a few days. That is also not overclocked. With the Corsair H80i (which i highly recommend :D) the CPU is only ever running around 55c max. Before i got the H80i, the CPU ran well into the high 70s on the stock cooler and i never experience a shutdown. Which i why i can only attribute the shutdowns to the 1080 Ti

Here is a picture of temps and usage while in Elite Dangerous. I took the Frame Limit off to stress test. If it cant be seen well, my CPU is running at 33c

Ive just been playing with the fan curve in Afterburner and this seems to have drop temps quite a bit. Turning the fans to 100%, under the same conditions, the GPU is at 58c but the card overall has cooled down quite a bit. Just the noise of the fans to deal with now :/

I believe so, it hasn't shut down after 2 hours, but the fans are quite loud running at 91%

Also, it's not usable really as I have my case on the out with all panels off. By no means a permanent setup. I'm tempted to send it back and get an MSI Seahawk

Same card here, very similar case fan count. My GPU topped out at 75 yesterday but definitely no resets. There's no way you should need to run the fans any higher than stock to keep it stable.

Ive put the sides back on the case, this has made the GPU jump up to 78c with fans on default. The scary thing is though my mobo temps have jumped from 33 without sides to 51c on sensor 4. Im assuming thats the one nearest the 1080.

NZXT 340 Case. I've tried 1:1 curve, but the GPU still finds its way upto 77c. Thats not too much of a concern, its just how hot the card gets as a whole. I think im just going to send it back. Im that impressed with the Corsair H80i on my CPU, i might just wait and get the MSI / Corsair Seahawk when it comes out. Should be cool n quiet then :)

Most people are reporting 70C with that card on default fan curve, with similar nice boosts. I'd suspect either poor thermal paste application on that unit, or the H80i/fan setup in your system. For example, if the CPU isn't getting very hot, the cooler fan won't be working too hard, meaning it can't exhaust much air. Like I said, just an example. I'm not sure where you have the H80i placed. I'd try swapping some things around just to test before sending back. But up to you. :)

Many thanks for all your help. Like I say, the 70c GPU doesn't concern me, I see that as normal under load. It's just how hot the card gets as a whole and in turn how much that heats up the rest of the system. I suspect Danny75 you could well be right with regards to the H80i keeping the CPU so cool thus keeping the case fans slower. I suppose i could just crank every fan on max, but that ain't really my thing. I've requested a return and get the MSI / Corsair watercooled version when it's out instead. Many thanks all

Had the 980Ti MSI Gaming X and also found the backplate was blistering hot under load. It concerned me, so I took the cooler off and put a Kraken G10 with the EVGA Hybrid cooler on it.

With that, the backplate was warm to the touch, GPU 30c lower under load and noticed CPU fan didn't ramp up nearly as much with the fan on the Hybrid radiator exhausting heat out of the case.
