The card is a an nvidia gtx 460 oc by gigabyte, I was just playing gta 5 when the screen froze & Windows rebooted.

When it rebooted the bios startup had rows of blue dots down it and the resolution was off

As it boots to windows the colours are off too, and it continually fails to actually boot into Windows.

Trying to work out if it's the graphics card or another component

You could spend £60 and get a card so much faster than a 460 like a gtx 770 or radeon 7950, personally I'd look for a cheap GTX 770 would be a lovely upgrade from 460 :)

Not sure if your joking or not? I would like a new card anyway but if I've fried something else would sooner replace that first

Nah, it definitely sounds like the GPU is toast. If you want to try saving it, it might just be where the thermal paste has hardened over time and cracked. You could try replacing that, but personally I'd spend a bit of money on an upgrade.

Damn, won't mess with it, lasted since 2008 though!

The processor is " Intel i5 760 2.8GHz Socket 1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor"

Motherboard "Asus P7P55D-E P55 Socket 1156 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard"

To think I only paid £144 for the Graphics card, looking at today's prices!

On the bright side, your £144 will now get you a brand new 1050Ti or an RX480 4GB, which are MUCH faster than your 460. :) To give you a very rough idea, PassMark scores for each are 2646 for the 460, 5826 for the 1050Ti, and 7994 for the RX480.

Not sure I'd go much above the 1050Ti/RX470/RX480 levels with your current CPU as you'll find the GPU will be held back a bit and spending more on a faster GPU will probably not give you faster results in most cases. Obviously, if you're planning a new motherboard/processor soon then that's different and it may be worth spending more to unlock the GPU's full potential when you upgrade the rest of the system later.

R5 with RX480 looks on the cards for you now then ;) killer setup for the overall price (other than DDR4, but that a pain for any new system be it Intel or AMD).

Well i replaced the card and it was indeed that which had died on me. Took it to bits and the thermal compound was dry , damage is likely done though. Thanks to those who helped!

You'll find it'll still probably work if you replace the thermal paste.
