New Phone Time..

Hi All,

I'm imminently moving from a large employer where I have used by company device as my main phone for a number of years. The new organisation is much smaller with a limited UK presence and therefore, simply cover the (full) cost of each employee's mobile bill each month.

So I'm now looking for a new device, ideally on Vodafone due to coverage issues around us and whilst I'd like a Pixel I think the limited contracts on offer rule this out (buying a phone outright won't be reimbursed).

Main uses are email, Google drive and linked apps, fitness tracking, photography (incl Instagram) and music streaming (no real gaming and no Facebook for example)

My list so far is:
- Galaxy S8
- iPhone 7
- HTC 10
These are all around the same price point via third parties on Vodafone.

I've always used Android historically but could be tempted to move over to Apple.

Any thoughts? What have I missed?

I've been having similar thoughts, I binned off the HTC as the camera is supposedly horrific in comparison to its competition. I've also been considering the Xperia XZ and Huawei P10 as outside choices, along with the S7 because the S8 just seems horrifically expensive for what is ultimately a phone and a fairly minor update to the S7.

I'm struggling with cost though really, 2 years ago I got an Xperia Z3 on a decent contract at £27 per month, now it seems i'm looking at £40+ for anything decent or 35 and a huge lump up front. Costs have increased hugely really but the actual phones don't really have many new standout features that get me excited, it seems to just be a sea of faster processors, more RAM and higher resolution screens. I've not really come across anything that has made me think 'wow, that's the phone to have' right now. I would go SIM only and keep the Z3 but the battery is on it's way out now and so rather than 1 charge for 2 days, it's more like 2 charges for 1 day.

I have always had iPhones but refused to get the 7 as I never saw it as much of an upgrade over the 6s.

Moved to 7 Edge and haven't looked back since.

The Huawei P10 has just come out, which is a very modest upgrade to the P9. Which means you can get the P9 for much less now - so I'd suggest adding that to your list.

Relistically, adequately powered android slab's are all very similar. I'm in it for the dual Leica lensed cameras. Only thing that might get near to my ill fated Panasonic CM1.

iPhone 7, moved from Android and would never go back to Google.

But then a lot of things I have read say that now is just about the worst time to be an iPhone? What with the 7 being a minor change from the 6S and then upcoming 8 supposedly having big changes?

Went and had a look at the weekend and the S8 feels a bit odd - almost like it is too long (I do have small hands though).

Also now wondering if the S7 is worth a look - the prices seem to be dropping with the S8 coming out and I can't see a huge spec difference?

I had the S6 Edge but I like the iPhone 7 more. I never had an iPhone before, always Samsung mobiles. I also thought the S6/S7 was oversized. I'm sure the iPhone 8 will have big changes but it's a while away.

Have an s7edge and I'd still go for that phone now over the s8 due to the price and battery

If price is no concern (doesn't seem to be), I'd go S8. Newer tech, further from being end-of-life/unsupported, bigger screen will also be handy for work tasks

The only phones I'd personally buy right now would be either an s8, pixel or a iPhone 7. Given the choice I'd normally opt for one of the latter 2 but the iPhone and pixel will likely have new versions with pretty major updates this year most likely including a screen to match the s8 bezel free design.

Right now I'd probably say go for the s8 though i do wish it was a bit more competitively priced!

Not just that, but it's also got a relatively small and lower resolution screen than most, yet a comparably large battery and super efficient SoC. With emails and screen on time a priority for most when it comes to business use, this phone will do that all day long, and with Blackberrys apps.

Low-mid range soc doesnt necessarily mean its efficient - it will have to go on higher load to do same task and therefore potentially use more power.

The sd835 is already 20-40% more efficient than 821 which is generation ahead of 625 I think. I would not be at all surprised if there is barely any difference in normal power consumption or if sd835 is actually better. Exynos is supposed to be even more efficient.

Screen resoultion can be changed on most flagship phones nowadays to same or lower than blackberry one and you can also get "keyboard case" if you feel like you need one although touch keyboards are just as quick if not better nowadays.

Whilst I would agree with you that blackberry was the superior choice few years ago before they died, I just dont think its the case anymore. I can't think of one thing they offer over the competition nowadays.

My dad insists on using blackberries, he absolutely loves them. Yet even he concedes that they are far behind the competition.

The blackberry ship sailed long ago (and struck a massive iceberg)
