why are south facing gardens better than north facing in the uk?

Would you rather have a little bit of sun in the garden in the morning. Or a lot of sun in the garden in the afternoon and evening?

South facing garden here and love it :)

It's pretty damn obvious. Sun rises in east, moves to south, sets west

Therefore a North facing will be blocked by house

It's a policy Thatcher brought in, she never cared much for the north.

The correct answer, it's all Thatchers fault. In notable Socialist Paradise Venezuela the inequality between North and South facing gardens is vastly lower than in the UK.

I've got a north facing garden, its a new estate and we're facing people who obviously have south facing gardens.. 2 of the 4 houses opposite have now shelled out for electric sun shade/awning type things and the others have their curtains closed all summer.

In fairness the setup is pretty much the whole back of the house which is the living room/dining room is window but either way, I'm happy having traded having to chase the sun around the garden for being able to see the TV and manage the temperature in here.

because north facing gardens suck. get essentially zero sun.
currently last two foot of garden has sun, and that wont last long, after that nothing but shade for the rest of the day.

Not my garden. Not at all. Solid sun on our lawn all day.
thats because there are variables, but a true north facing, normal sized garden will see next to nothing.

you probably have a long garden and as such a decent part isn't in the shadow of the house. Or its not true north etc.

It's an 80ft garden and is actually NE facing.
