Thought I'd post this here as apposed to GD to avoid the usual muck raking of opinions. Feel free to move it though mods :)

Since the age of about 9 (way too young) I've been an enormous fan of Billy Connolly, as I think most people with a sense of humour are!

However, I saw a comment from a Scottish dude lambasting him recently calling him an 'unpatriotic swine' and the like. Got me thinking, what's the general consensus on Billy these days from within his own country?

I'm not currently within Scotland but I'm a fan generally, I doubt I'd agree with everything he says but then again I can't think of anyone who I do agree with on every subject. It would be interesting to know why he was judged as unpatriotic - if it's because he spends most of his time outside the country then that's one thing, if it's for the reasons that Cuchulain suggests then that's different but I don't think that Billy Connolly would be particularly bothered about being judged as unpatriotic when the manifestation of it is one he disagrees with.

If it is for the latter reason and it's to do with his views on Scottish nationalism then it's curious that Sir Sean gets a bit of a free pass in that regard given he's strongly a pro-independent Scotland so no-one seems to question his patriotism but he hasn't lived in the country for decades. He does however offer/threaten(?) to come back if Scotland gets independence - I'm not sure if that's supposed to be some sort of incentive for anyone.

That was basically the reason for his comment. Always thought that argument was pretty flimsy tbh... does where you live really make a difference?

Of course most of the people who don't care for Billy due to him spending so much time out of the country don't have the same view of Sean Connery.

I like Billy and have a smiliar dislike for the SNP but am also patriotic aboout Scotland. If people don't find I'm funny, fair enough, but to dislike him for being an unpatriotic swine? *shakes head*

As someone who is pro democracy/Scottish independence;) I personally have no issue with the big yin. Nor I have I met any "nationalist" who has labelled him unpatriotic. Unfortunately idiots are idiots...

It's a tough gig for a Scottish celeb who is not a supporter of separation.
Connolly has always despised nationalism and nationalists, which, given his Irish catholic background is surprising.

I've yet to hear an explanation from the separatists why you can't be a Scottish patriotic yet desire Scotland to remain in the UK.

because THE ENGLISH ******** RUN IT

Logic doesn't need to come into it, it's a comfort hate to fall back on.

Sad to read that Billy's health is failing quicker than we all expected.

His mobility and memory problems now so advanced that live appearances seem unlikely.

It's a lesson in the vagaries of fate that 20 or so years ago Billy gave up all the things he liked that were also bad for him, booze, fags, weed, loose women, only to be struck down by a random visitation of Parkinsons.
