£20k, up to 30k a year, what do I buy?

Since Chrysler/Fiat decided to drop the magnificent 300C from the UK market I would agree
the Mazda 6 looks a good motor. All the bells and whistles for less than £25K

I got mine in 2015 from Romford Mazda as a pre-reg for £19,250. Romford usually seem to have decent deals on. Mine has the previous interior which had been updated to hud since.

I had similar requirements and I went for a 2013 (63) F31 330D M Sport with the Auto gearbox that had 28k Miles, Visibility Package (Xenons, Adaptive Lights and High Beam Assist) and Pro Nav.

The problem is, getting good spec is hard. I didn't get HK Audio and really, really regret it. I believe the standard F10 Audio is better so not having HK might not be the end of the world. Adaptive cruise is I imagine borderline unicorn car on a 3 series.

This is what drives me mad with almost every car you buy these days..

You can't just go an buy high end aftermarket stereo & speakers & sub and throw them in like you could in the old days..

I would defo go BMW... out of those options they are the best.

Fox will wonder if I'm crazy... but I prefer the 3/4 series to the 5... 5 just feels wrong to me - it has the cocoon of the 6 series, but in a saloon and the roof just feels too high and some other bits that just don't quite fit together. But that's personal preference and you might like it. Don't know if a 640d would be in budget? I rather like the 6 series.

Take a trip to a dealer and sit in them / test drive them / see what feels right with you.

I would have a poverty spec 320d over any of the other cars mentioned in this thread.

The CVT gearbox in the Lexus / Toyota is HORRIBLE... great idea in concept, terrible in practice.
I've never heard of a "magnificent 300C"... I only know of the "**** 300C".
Mercs from the previous generation are horrible places to be.
Golf/Sirocco R are very good for what thy are, but outclassed by BMW.
I haven't found any Audis that I like... but that's personal preference and I know that they are good cars, I just don't like them... the feel of the drive, no other reason.

I dislike diesel, but like Fox mentions - there is something good about the BMW 6 cylinder diesel engines.

I would still prefer petrol though... the x35i engines are brilliant and if you're gentle on the throttle then you can see 40mpg out of them on your motorway cruise (keep under 80mph and predict the road ahead) and still have more fun with them elsewhere. The x30d/x35d engines will see you 45-50mpg with relative ease.

Go out and have a look, see what feels right to you - everyone is different... but I love the build quality and handling of BMW, they're better than all the other cars in this thread. My wife's 224k E46 is still going strong and will easily hit 300k, I drove it today out of curiosity and it still doesn't feel rough around the edges, although we have done quite a bit of suspension/brake work in the last 1-1.5 years.

This just isn't true but i'm pretty sure you have been regularly trolling this one out in other threads.

It is true and everyone I know who's been in one shares the same opinion... the newest generation are a major improvement, but out of the OPs budget.

The only exception being the highest end AMG models... also outside of OPs options.

Repeating the same opinion is not trolling, it's expressing an opinion that is worth considering when spending such a significant sum of money on something you will spend a large portion of your life in.

I used to deliver brand new BMW's and Mercs, I would prefer to be in the Merc every time for comfort. They are far from a "Horrible place to be" however you look at it.

Yes it is but it's probably the rarest option after night vision. It's basically never specced.
WOW I would have expected most drivers who do a fairly high mileage to of wanted the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go option included in there spec

 That option costs almost a thousand quid ( £965)

20k to play with? Maybe a few year old XE? Failing that an older XF?

Want some power... 5/6 year old XFR. A lot of car for the money.

Yes I like Jags... and I'm only 27... maybe I'm old before my time.

Also I believe they are pretty well specced as standard, well, comparability so compared to BMW, Audi, Mercs?
