Britain's decline - is money holding us at ransom?

The self made super rich, yes they are deciding to leave little or nothing to family.

Its not them you have to worry about, its the older families whose wealth was not built on hard work but the persecution/slavery/ill treatment of people no matter the human cost. These are the ones that need a bullet.

Every nation has them.

This is very true,

My partner's step father is very well known in the business world, he made most of his money via dodgy investments and recently had to pay £millions in HMRC fines

He's literally hoarded all of his cash, he has around 5x Ferraris, and a whole load of other insane cars - his children have had to struggle and borrow money off their other relatives so they could claw enough deposit for a house, and a whole load of other stuff - meanwhile he's just buying insane cars and houses, he also likes to go to Saville row and spend a few grand on shirts every week or so, it's totally ridiculous.

Maybe we have a different definition of 'hoarding' cash. The shiny (yet worthless) toys you describe and the capital spend don't really yell 'CASH HOARDER' to me :p

Rather than work for it you mean?

Why should his kids be entitled to his earnings above upbringing costs? I ignored my parents and didn't do aswell as I should have, but do their earnings entitle me to cash?

If so pls respond, need cash.

Yeah I kind of have a completely different view on this.

Granted we have limited information on the guy, but we have to assume that he doesn't help his children as much for perhaps 3 reasons :

1)He is selfish with 'his' money and doesn't believe in supporting his children anymore than he has to. Like those fathers that only pay the bare minimum that the CMS tells them to pay despite having the ability to pay more.
2)He has some higher purpose, and believes that his children should earn their own way in the world. Every achievement is more the sweeter when you have to sweat for it.
3)The loaded guy is not actually liquid, and survives on credit etc.

Who knows.

All I know is that what motivates me with my business(s) is my children, the ability to give them the start in life that perhaps I didn't have. If this makes me a bad father.....then so be it.

The big issue though is that a lot of things are based off of parental wealth and the government tends to look at you with abandonment if they find out that your parents are excruciatingly wealthy, such that you'll never get help.

So he's just a dick, but that's fine.

And how do you suggest people do that? Is this some sort of bootstraps entrepreneurial thing? What jobs can people do that aren't already provided for by big business?

Education, for one

The UK needs more James Dyson types. It needs to return to being the pinnacle of education/innovation and actually start making things in earnest again. Rather than relying heavily on the services sector.

Just because you lack vision doesn't mean there is no opportunity. A defeatist attitude is part of the problem in my opinion. "Well what else is there left to be discovered?"..... A lot!

Think of all the "big businesses" that didn't exist 10 years ago. Sadly most of them are American rather than British.

I'd agree with that. Education is falling to bits in this country as the government doesn't seem to value it.

Hold on, since when I do I lack vision? Where did I say that there's nothing left to discover?

It was the impression you gave me with an earlier statement

What jobs can people do that aren't already provided for by big business?

My point about discovery wasn't specifically aimed at you, it was at those who generally think along the same lines you were above

There's nothing useful left to invent now other than a limitless power generator.

Then comes matter reclamation, supreme commander and star trek.

Dyson just copies everything and gets it made in Malaysia.

Hardly supporting the British economy.

I may be a few years out of date, so possibly wrong. But though Dyson outsourced manufacturing to Asia in the early 2000's I think there are still a couple of thousand employees in the UK?

It's an accumulation of factors but (almost) everyone is ultimately to blame as we allow consecutive governments to kick the financial can down the road to get in/stay in power and **** the future. As long as the short term idiots (99% of the population) are satisfied with today they don't care about their own future, their kids or grandkids chances.

We are all culpabale for this mess, as an example if the government proposed say a 2% tax rise for 10 years to solve public finances and an increase in booze/fags/fuel charges to help the NHS you can guarantee people would go ape**** over this. The same people will be the ones going ape**** over failing public institutions.

Unless people take accountability and action and recognise that they can't have everything and life doesn't owe them a living then things will continue to degenerate. Personally I have complete and utter belief that nothing will get better until it hits rock bottom as people are too ill educated and short term thinkers to give a **** as long as they can sit in front of their 60" tv and go to Spain every year.

Agreed.

Sadly, 'LOL, live for now, LOL' or #YOLOBUYING!! are just too prevalent to stop.

Hey, if you can't beat them ... buy their perfectly adequate 2nd hand stuff for rock bottom prices while they chase the next fleeting high in today's worthless purchase! :p

Indeed. Whilst I know what I'm abou to say is somewhat extreme please bare with me but it almost feels like the "end of an empire" era where everyone is throwing themselves heedlessly into hedonistic distractions as if to ignore reality means it will eventually just go away and leave us alone. Sadly it won't and as an educated person it truly terrifies me the way we are going.

Society relies upon a social compact whereby we all agree to play by the rules. If things keep going the way they do where people cannot get by when billionaires get absurdly richer by the day I can see that compact breaking down. The police only work because people believe they do but if a couple of thousand people decide actually **** off we will take what we want there's very little they can do (see London riots)

I think we are in a phase where the government has an opportunity to turn the tide but it means making hard choices which they will never do as they only care about feathering their own nest. This opportunity will slap past and we will continue down the path of things getting worse and worse for everyone but the stupidly rich. Where it all ends will be fascinating though the "ending" when it comes to head is still probably a generation or two away.
