Have any of you forumites spent any significant period living/working in Doha in the last 5 years? What's it like? Any comparisons you could make to Dubai would be helpful.

Whilst not Qatar, I do work a fair bit now in Saudi. Prior to my first visit, most people put the fear of god into me. It's a war zone, every ones nasty, bad food, can't do this, can't do that blah blah blah.

When I actually went out there, I thought it was just like America with Burkas lol and the food is fantastic.

oh, and Bahrain is great ;-)

well you seem to want to stick your head in the sand so to speak..

I'll just leave this here:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-qatar
The British Embassy Doha cannot issue exit permits for British passport holders under any circumstances, this must be done through the employer and the Ministry of Interior.

Just keep in mind that if you upset your employer they have the power to stop you from leaving the country - you can be trapped there at their discretion.

This can happen to Westerners - not just the modern day slave labour they use from places like India

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/nov/27/zahir-belounis-french-footballer-qatar-exit-visa
Zahir Belounis, the French footballer trapped in Qatar without pay due to the country's sponsorship system for migrant workers, has been granted an exit visa after a two-year struggle and is scheduled to leave the state this week.

Male but would be taking a family. I would require a multi-exit visa so as not to be in a situation where employer could hold my exit to ransom, wife and kids can travel freely anyway I understand.

Not really, I just don't want to have to waste time reading posts from all the Daily Mail wielding sheep who seem unable to resist commenting on things they know nothing about. Not saying that's you and thank you for the links.

FWIW one of my ex-colleagues has lived and worked there for a few years now with his wife and kids, seems to enjoy it. The other guys that work in the ME seem to prefer Dubai, and Saudi seems to be the least preferred.

Qatar is one stop to Saudi. It's not the UAE. I live in the UAE. You won't get anyone here leaving to go therefor a better lifestyle, only extra money. The locals here dont have a great view of Qatar either. If you have a good package go for it, It's probably not that bad, but I'm not sure if you ha e a family how much they would enjoy it. The UAE itself is quite boring but Qatar would be even worse.
