Does the registered keeper need to be with the car when selling?

Just a quick question - my mother in law is the registered keeper of my fiancé's car. I obviously don't want to take the mother in law with me to go and buy a new car if we're trading in the fiancé's. Is it necessary to have her there? My fiancé has been the only driver of it ever, it just must have been convenient at the time for her mother to sign the papers.

Cheers!

Front the insurance? What does that mean?

Fronting and vehicle insurance. Fronting is an illegal car insurance practice whereby an older driver - often a parent - tries to save money by saying they're the main user of a vehicle driven by a younger or other high-risk motorist.

Cheaper to front the insurance you mean?

Anyway, no you don't, just get her to sign the v5.

Rubbish, just because it has a different registered keeper doesn't mean anybody is fronting. I'm the registered keeper of my mrs car and she is the primary driver on insurance. Same situation no fronting.

At first you don't know why, but now you do? I'm seriously struggling to think of a reason you would be the only user of a car ever, but have it registered to somebody elses name for a non-fraudulent reason.

To answer this how about if his Mrs mum bought her the car as a present? Like in my situation above... there you go, a good reason for you.

Maybe so, but what an ongoing hassle having to explain to the insurance every time why your car isn't in your name, and explaining to the police officer which pulls you over etc...

A car is a pretty poor/risky gift choice anyway to me, unless they picked it out and knew about it anyway the chances of them having some reason to dislike it are extremely high.

In fairness our situation is similar, both cars in my name (as technically "I" bought them) but I'm a very very occasional user of the fiesta. Insurance don't seem to care when you are a couple and on the very odd occasion when the other half has been asked anything by the police she has given her name as the owner with our address which seems like it should really present an issue thinking about it.

Either way, just have her sign the v5 - should be fine

They may have asked me and I've unknowingly said yes to be honest. I hadn't seen the papers until a few days ago. Either way, they've never come back to me and said oh you're not the registered keeper, so that's a non-issue.

You bought a new car, gave the old one to your wife/child/sibling, but to save adding another owner to the v5 kept it in your name?

Edit: on a related note, why does the V5 refer to number of previous owners when it says in big letters on the front page that it isn't proof of ownership?
