Do I need to stretch to a 1080TI?

Hey guys,

Currently using an MSI HD 7950...so it's a little past its shelf life.

Been looking at a major system upgrade which includes either a gtx 1080 or 1080TI. Now, I'll be gaming at 1440p, and if absolutely necessary I could stretch to a 1080TI...but the extra £350~ that will cost over an above a 1080 could be better spent elsewhere; outwith the realms of my rig.

At 1440p, would I see a major increase in performance/lifetime usage of the card? Or is it a case of the TI is the absolute beast, but a 1080 would last me almost as long?

Information seems sketchy right now on the TI as it's so new, so would appreciate feedback from people that have it or have/had both.

I run a regular 980 at 1440p and still max almost everything, so a regular 1080 would set you for a good few years.
 
If you are whacking up settings and don't have the latest CPU,even at 1440p a GTX1080 can get pushed if you want to max out settings in modern games.

However,if you use sane high quality settings,then it should be fine.
 
1080 will last you 2/3 years easily at 1440p, the Ti you'll probably get another 1/1.5 years out of it. If you tend to upgrade every 2.5/3yrs then get the 1080, if longer then get the Ti :)
 
This is how I see the the current GPU requirements and what I'd buy based on wanting at least a solid 60fps or where not possible a locked, consistent 30fps for the next couple of years at 1440p & 4K

1440p High @60fps = 1080
1440p Ultra @60fps = 1080Ti
4K High @30fps = 1080
4K High @60fps = 1080Ti
4K Ultra @30fps = 1080Ti
 
1080 and with the drop in prices perfect timing, that £350 could be spent towards G-sync if you havent got that 1440p monitor yet!

or watercooling it either loop or AIO to make the most out of Pascal

1440p g-sync on order :) albeit...a TN display. (cue the screams).

Thanks all for the input, leaning towards a good 1080 now. It's so easy to get carried away when upgrading! Processor is an Intel Core i7-4770K, so not the newest or fastest, but seems to be doing the job right now.

just say invest in as faster ram as your board can handle :D

I did want to push myself to an IPS (and went to view some in the flesh). Yes, the colour is more vibrant, but I did a cheeky backlight bleed test in-store and 2 of 3 panels were what I would class as unacceptable. Seems like luck of the draw though (with the lower end panels) and being an abused/prodded display probably didn't do them any favours. Had the IPS been the same price for the size and G-sync, I might have swayed towards the IPS because the display was much warmer and richer.
 
A GTX1070 would do you fine for 1440p/60fps unless you're obsessed with needing Ultra settings.

This would still be a 'massive' upgrade from your 7950 and would save you some money.

Agreed with Jedi above a good TN is by no means bad compared with an IPS panel. If I had to choose a 1440p g-sync my choice would be a TN from experience of them both. IPS is good but the smaller panel can make BLB more noticeable which in my opinion is far more annoying.

I would say if it's a 1440 144hz panel then get a good custom cooled Ti if you can stretch to it. A 1080 is fast but the Ti will see you through if you plan to keep the card for a decent period of time. Around 30+% quicker depending on the game.

A 4770k is still a decent CPU just give it some overclock if required.

It's a 1440p 165hz display, should arrive today.

Ahh spanner in the works. I think I'll wait for the refreshed 1080's to arrive and if they're the same price as the current ones, I'll go with that. If they raise the price of the refreshed 1080's, depending on how much that is, I might push towards a TI.

Yes, get one for £699, the FE run quiet and cool enough tbh. I don't even bother to overclock. The card is so damn fast.

The best buys performance VS Price are.

RX 480 4GB ~ lower end
RX 480 8GB / RX 580 8GB ~ mid end
GTX 1070 ~ high end
GTX 1080 ~ Ti enthusiast

Avoid the other cards imho.
