4k @ 60Hz question

Hi All,

I have an old MSI R9 280X graphics card which has the following connections:

HDMI 1.4
2x Mini Displayport 1.2

I have just bought a 4k television which has a 60Hz refresh rate, which I would like to plug in. On the webpage for my graphics card it says that the mini displayports support "4096x2160 @ 50 Hz".

Is there any way I can achieve 60Hz? I've noticed devices like this one which can supposedly convert a mini DisplayPort into HDMI 2.0 - but I don't understand how that can work. Do these devices "interpolate" frames to simulate the extra bandwidth required for 4k@60Hz?

Thanks

DP 1.2 should be fine for 3840x2160 @ 60Hz (which is the common "4K"), give it a go and see if it works.

Although TVs don't usually have Displayport, which TV is it?

DisplayPort 1.2 has more available bandwidth than HDMI 2.0 so it should work just fine. Don't know why description for your card says 50hz.

That's a good point - I've just checked the specs of the TV and it only has HDMI - no DP. Looks like I'll have to buy the DP - HDMI adapter anyway. I think the HDMI 1.4 port only supports something silly like 24Hz @ 4k...

edit: the TV is a Samsung 40KU6400

Yup then you will need the DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

Just make sure to check the TV actaully has HDMI 2.0 ports :p. Most TVs will only have one HDMI 2.0 port while the rest is 1.4.
