Does anyone have any recommendations on some decent work shoes? I just want some simple plain brown lace-up shoes.

In the past I’ve tended to go with cheaper river island/asos shoes as I like the look of them, but I wear down the heel far too quickly considering I don’t do much walking in them.

I’m quite happy to spend a bit more money, but only if they’ll last considerably longer than the cheap ones.

You'll always wear down heels quickly no matter how much you spend - I'm guessing it is one side of the heel or the other that is wearing and so is as much about your gait as the distance you walk . The answer is to get a quality pair of shoes where the uppers will last forever and be prepared to get them re-soled once in a while. Churches would be a good choice.

You also feel better spending £30 getting something resoled when you've spent a few hundred on the overall shoe. Getting a £30 pair of shoes re-soled doesn't really make sense, so if that's your budget treat them as short-lived disposable items.

No experience myself but some people swear by Geox. I usually wear Dune myself for more formal/smarter footwear but durability seems a bit hit and miss model to model.

If you want to spend a bit more Russell and Bromley are quite well regarded for durability.

I generally go for military kit. Durable, comfy all day and usually can be re-soled these days.

For work when I don't need something dress shoe like I usually just wear some of the smarter looking Amblers Steel work boots - they last as long as anything and cheap enough to replace once they do start degrading - they usually last 2-3x longer than most other brands in the same price range.

I bought some Century branded shows from the lesbian man shoe shop (Deichmann) for £10 3 years ago and they are still going strong, hardly any wear.

I hate shoes though. Purely fashion and I hate I can't wear something more comfortable. Hence spending as little as possible.

For anyone that can wear outdoor style shoes/boots in their work, I'm very impressed with my Salomon boots that I bought about 18 months ago. Dead comfy and very splash proof.

anything with Dainite soles, I have some Barker Dainite soled shoes made by Herring and they are incredibly comfortable, look great and with proper care (ie leather treatment once a fortnight and giving them a brush/using shoe trees after every wear, and not wearing them two days in a row) they're wearing very nicely :)

If you're a UK 10.5 or 11.5 these are a bargain if you like brown shoes:

I only buy Oliver Sweeney when they're on sale.
They're absolutely brilliant after you've broken them in

I like Loake shoes. They take a while to break in but once they have they're like slippers.
I had some Loakes and it was the most miserable foot experience I've had.

I knew they'd take a bit of breaking in, so would be a bit bad at first.... but it never happened. After 9 months it was as bad as day one, but the leather soles (which were dangerously slippery walking in town when it was wet) wore through and I binned the uncomfortable ********.

I have around 10 pairs, their cheaper ranges are cheaper shoes and I don't rate them much, but the 250 upwards shoes are hard wearing and renewable too.
