980Ti/1070 or Vega/1080Ti for 4k/60fps

So I'm in a bit of a situation here. Vega is supposed to come out end of June but I've been waiting since January to buy a GPU.

Hopefully Vega will be somewhat comparable to a 1080Ti. But then if Volta comes out early 2018 that would only mean 6 months usage..which would be quite costly.

The last card I had was the 980Ti which was perfect for me and a few adjustments on games (which had no visual impact for me personally) meant I could play at 60fps @ 4k.

So do I go for a 980Ti/1070 now to keep me going til Volta? or do I wait and buy a Vega/1080Ti and keep that for 2 years or so?

What do you think would be the most cost effective strategy?

Why would volta affect your usage of Vega? Buy whatever fits your needs; if a GTX 980 Ti is enough then get that, if not get something else (personally waiting for Vega because of HDMI 2.1 as I plan on using a TV as my main monitor).

It's to do with the resale value more than anything.

For example:

1. Buy Vega for say £600 in June
2. Volta comes out in 2018
3. Value of Vega drops to £300 (estimate) because of the big jump in performance

Or I could perhaps buy a 1070 for £300? now which will be worth less than £150 (again estimate) when Volta comes out. Cost of that would be £150 loss.

1070 is slightly faster than a 980Ti which would be enough for 4k/60fps for me personally (obviously changing some settings).

So in my eyes it's a £150 loss vs £300 loss. But at the end of the day I'm not hugely fussed about pushing settings to ultra/max out everything at 4k so would it be better financially to go for a 1070 now instead of going for a Vega?

Or do I wait, buy Vega and use that for 2 years or so then sell it for whatever it is worth then (say £200).

I know I'm making a lot of assumptions but that's all I can do at the moment. I just want the most cost effective option to be honest.

Get the 1080ti. Resale value will still be good.

1080Ti for £700 then keep that for 2 years or so. Or buy it then sell when Volta comes along (while it's got some value)? Which would be better?

Get a 980ti as they are great value s/h at the moment. Then wait for Volta which could even be this year.

Problem is the warranty. Aren't I screwed if it breaks?

If you're so worried about the resale value then the only real solution for that is to time your sell a month before the new cards arrive (which you will always know about and can do; the market is slow to adjust if you're on your game). No matter what, high end cards depreciate fast. A 1070 is imo not enough for 4K anymore, and certainly not going forward. I mean what's the point of going 4K and making tens of (meaningful) compromises? You're either about that life, or you ain't.

Yeah I know what you mean. Maybe I adopted 4k too early. You say 1070 isn't enough for 4k, but do you mean with settings to the absolute max and 60fps minimum?

Not if it's a one with a 5 years warranty. Like a Zotac.

That's true, that could be an option.

Wait for AMD`s new card it will probably have an affect on pricing but only by a small margin. Something else to consider if, U Turn Theresa May win`s big in the election it will give the £ a good boost which should bring down prices a little bit more also.

Tbf it'll be fine on Medium settings and still look great :)

That's good to know then :p

That's true. I've waited 4 months already lol Good point about the election, every little helps!

It would be very wise to wait and see what Vega brings to the table. We'll know it's performance within a month IMO :)

That's probably the best decision to be fair. I know I will want the best GPU so it'll be Vega or 1080Ti I guess!

Since you are concerned about cost then you also need to consider the price difference between G-Sync and Freesync.

Indeed. I am interested in a new monitor in the near future and will likely go for Freesync 2. I will either be selling my 1080 and go Vega soon if pricing is good. If not will keep my 1080 until Volta is out which will push Vega price down and I will pick it up then :)

Wait few weeks for Vega to come out. Just in case you do not regret it later on.
Dont make yourself feeling like a fool spending £700 right now.

I still remember many around here were saying "nah don't wait for Ryzen buy the 6900K". End result, £700 thrown away. (the price difference between 6900K and 1700).

I don't have a Freesync/G-Sync monitor. Does that matter at all really?

They both make games a little more fluid and responsive, less stutters. G-Sync costs £150+ compared to Freesync. Freesync uses an open industry standard which Nvidia still lack the hardware to support thus they require G-Sync to do the same job.
