Just had a worrying call from my step son to say someone came round to make a meter reading from my solar panels. However he did not ask the guy for any ID or anything, just let him in and showed him the solar panel meeting. Tad angry at my boy about that. Basically let a complete stranger in the house!

Anyway, just wondering who would collect meter readings? My fit agreement is with EDF but my boy said he had no EDF logo's on him. But he had a coat with a word starting with O. Any idea's who this would be?

My lad is 17 yrs old and apparently does not think to ask for any ID and just takes their word for why they want to come in. Anyone know of a good school for common sense lessons?

Common sense should be beaten into them at a early age - that's why he is a ********* :p Just think if someone told him we should open our doors to immigration as it will do this country good he will believe it .

I believe EDF need to read you FIT meter quarterly so it will just be a sub contractor doing meter readings for them, very few of the energy companies do there own meter readings they all seem to use third parties. Must admit I never ask the meter man for ID just show him to the cellar and then wait for him to return and leave there are far easier ways to gain access to my house to pinch stuff that wouldn't involve an unwanted confrontation.

I presume that the guy looked like somebody who would be taking readings, i.e. had some kind of specialised tablet/computer for recording the readings on and also had a complete uniform on. He also possibly arrived in a van given that he won't be going from door to door (only to people with solar panels)? An ID doesn't really prove much, I could knock up an ID now in no time. It's the whole appearance that matters.

As A1ex2001 said, it's also more important that your step son made sure that the guy wasn't left unattended and just read the meter then left.

Well apparently he let them in and pointed to where the meter was and went back to the tv! I am stunned. Hopefully he woke up a bit when I pointed out he could have just let a murderer in!! Kids!

And yes I was just pointed to an article about they have to take meter readings every 2 years? My system turns 2 in 2 weeks time so amazing timing.

Usually outsource meter reading to a third party, who should wear appropriate uniform and show ID

I know g4s and others are doing readings now but the suppliers haven't told customers so people are getting worried / confused when they turn up at the door

Ps. ID cards are generally useless, my official ID looks so cheap and nasty you would think its a 2 minute fake from a cheap printer

Generally peeple never ask for ID, if the branded van, uniform and equipment dont convince you then a crappy ID isn't going to

E.On are my FIT provider although I haven't been an E.On customer for supply of electricity for years now. I've had two previous checks by them unannounced and yes they are supposed to check every two years. For the first time ever they've actually rung me and booked an appointment this time, someone's due tomorrow.
It's not a meter reading as such, just a check that the figures you've been giving tally with what they witness on the day and a visual inspection of the meter to check there's no funny business going on like back feeding E7 through it to rack up the kwh's

My parents solar is with EDF and each time they want to do a meter check they have always dropped through an email to arrange a visit rather than just randomly turning up.
