I was looking to get a new phone for the OH after her Moto G3 got stolen.

Having read the threads on here recently I have the following in mind:
  • Moto G5 Plus
  • Lenovo P2
  • Xperia X
  • Huawei P9 Lite
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
She wanted something quick and robust for taking to the gym to listen to music, has a fairly decent camera for landscape shots and generally lasts a few years with minimal fuss and updates.

I have probably missed a few others but hopefully someone can help.

Thanks in advance for some pointers.

Is she on a contract or must be sim free?

Some good mid-high end phones can be now had really cheap on contracts if she's spending anywhere close to £10-15 month sim free/payg.

I think the P2 is a solid overall choice brand new if you're after sim free and new but if she liked the moto G, either the G4 or G5 are decent budget picks (think the G4 had better hardware actually than G3 and G5).

As far as music listening in the gym/workout goes, any phone is kind of obstructive unless all you're doing is stretching - I would suggest just getting sansa clip for £20-30 and use that for music instead.

lenovo P2 will last a few years. it's battery life is 3-5 days so even if the battery does start to go which is usually what happens with time she should still get at least 2 days out of it. with others over time they need charging 2 times a day.

Hi i've similar criteria for my own phone i'm looking for at present. IT seems although the Lenovo P2 is a biggie (5.5" screen) it's lauded as incredible with it's party trick being the ridiculous battery life (Some people report 5+ days with mid-light usage)

I've just sent back a Lenovo ZUK Z2 which was a faster spec but unfortunately had a hardware fault, so I don't feel I can take the chance on another, sad because it was an awesome phone for £134!

I can't see past the P2 at present brand new from the high street.

Cheers everyone for giving your opinions on what device to get. The Lenovo P2 is the front-runner at the moment but the camera seems to be its achilles heel as it would be often used for quick snaps when the RX100 isn't with us. If she can get over that then it's a no brainer with the strong battery life and screen along without any real bloat. The hope is they continue to support future software updates.

The Honor 6X does seem another option. Missed out on the Honor 8 for a bargain price the other night.

I'd take a punt on a P2. worst comes to worse a better budget phone is released in 6 months. you can sell it for £150 and upgrade to that.

that is what i like about the budget end. you can chop and change phones often and it costs you nothing to do so.

Cheers for your help. The OH checked out the P2 yesterday and was happy with it. The strong battery life and screen along with near stock android has swung it for her. As for the camera if it is fine for quick snaps then that'll be fine as she wants to invest in a small micro thirds camera to progress her photography so can always sync the P2 to the Lumix for example and edit on the phone for her usual postings.
