Hi all,

I have a relatively small budget of £3000 for a car to use for a mixture of social and business use. Probably around 14000 miles per year (7000 social and 7000 business - motorway).

So far I've been looking at diesel variants of the Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and Mazda 6 around 2008.

I'd love to have some advice from people who know far more about cars than I!

Thanks.

those look like solid options, although do you need a saloon? maybe going for a hatchback like mazda 3, golf etc might be better?

personally i prefer low mileage over age, if you get something reasonably common with a good service history then they tend to be pretty solid.

The Mondeo is a hatchback.

Why would it be better?

By the time a car is 3 grand it isn't going to have mileage sufficiently low to make much difference to anything, condition is more important and generally age is as big a factor in this if not more so than mileage.

It might technically be a hatchback like the octavia, but i'm meaning in terms of overall size.

The reasoning for smaller cars is that the smaller cheaper models will reach the budget threshold quicker, meaning a younger car with less milage.

In the case of something like a Golf this is generally not true. Mondeos etc depreciate faster and offer better value for money at this end of the market.

Mondeo 2.0 out of that list, it has the solid Peugeot diesel engine in it. A taxi driver on here had a thread where he did ridiculous mileage and it was extremely reliable.
