Has insurance jumped up a lot?!

Last year my insurance through More Than was £566 for my 2003 330ci based on 7 years of uneventful, claim-free motoring. I've been with More Than for 7 years as their default renewal quote has always been cheaper than what confused.com offered!

This year my quote comes through after another year of not claiming, and they want £672! No changes in my circumstances at all. When I go onto confused.com all the quotes by 'reputable' companies are very similar? Has everyone's insurance increased?

As a side note, Hastings essential / direct / premier are all under £500, are they not very good when you need them?
 
I read in the paper last week that most insurers have had to up their premiums by ~6% this year. Yours seems a little harsh!
 
My insurer (admiral) doubled my renewal quote after 4 years with them, another years no claims and the same vehicle.

Went on confused and got myself £450 off for the same policy.

Its an absolute joke, think they only do it because of the auto renewal function and prey on people who forget to cancel it.
 
My insurance was down 20% on one car and the same on the other (after shopping round).

Renewals of the existing policies were up about 50%.
 
The auto-renewal price you receive should always be ignored. It's not a real price, it's an inflated penalty price for those who don't shop about.

I've been with Admiral for many years now, paid £480 last year, they wanted £550 this year and I ended up paying £405.

I paid 400 last year, this year they wanted 750 and were happy to reduce it to 620. Went elsewhere for 350.
 
My auto renewal was £40 more than last time. I found the cheapest quotes available were about £70 cheaper than that. Called my current insurer up and told them this and they straight away said they could do it for £70 cheaper. Bunch of crooks, the lot of them.
 
Admiral added £200 to my wife and I's multi-car policy.

They blamed it on the economy and new laws...

Unfortunately they were the cheapest so had to go with them :(

absolutely, process is:
1. get renewal letter
2. finish laughing at the stupid price
3. go to the usual suspects, shop around and get a bunch of quotes
4. ring up insurance company and tell em to beat the cheapest or your gone
5. if they dont beat it, then actually leave and go to the cheapest

generally, its amazing how many "discounts" they "forget" to apply to your policy and then conveniently remember the moment you call them out.
 
Is it worth going for something that gives you cashback or whatever?

last time I got insurance in the UK, 2014 (IIRC). I just called them up, and it went down by 50% straight away beating the previous years by a few quid with some extras like anyone driving my car and being able to drive anyone elses.
 
I know within the Elephant / Admiral group the renewal team appear to have authority to give a discount of £100-200 depending on circumstances. This is from my experience 3 years in a row. Whenever I receive renewal I call and query the price and say I'm going to go elsewhere at this price and they suddenly add a special discount - the most I got was last year of 200.

It's also worth calculating whether things like your mileage has changed and do not always assume additional more experienced drivers reduce premium. My annual mileage has decreased by about 4,000 - declaring that reduced my premium by £22. Adding my cousin who's 40 with no accidents or incidents decreased my premium by £200 last year. This year, however, removing him reduced my premium by £50.

Insurance is nuts!

Hastings always been cheapest for me. They make their money from changes, it's like £20 to add a driver, £20 to change the car, £30 to change address etc. As long as you don't change things often or at all, you're good with them.

Basically this. I treat the auto-renewal email as simply a reminder to go and find a better deal.
 
Nope got a renewal for £580 which was more than last year, but ran a quick quote on moneysupermarket and the cheapest was £490
 
i paid the same as last year, but apparently it would have been £30 less without the changes. So £365 for a GT86 with £0 excess and NCP (adding excess and removing NCP makes barely any difference).
 
I renewed mine last week with Aviva. From £276 to £291 this year so only a slight rise.

I think this has been the 3rd year in a row I have auto-renewed with Aviva. I shop around everywhere but no-one comes close to my renewal price each year.
