There's nothing odd about it. The French polls were consistently accurate throughout this election, and in any case the Brexit/Trump polls were within the margin of error.

I don't really understand what the French people are expecting. They've booted out one president and replaced him with... a clone?
I'm no fan of Le Pen but putting Macron in charge is like switching your allegiance from organ grinder to his monkey.
I expect absolutely nothing to change in terms of how the country is run.

/shrug - Macron's victory steadies the sinking ship, allowing us to make an orderly exit from the EU. Good news for us, bad news for France - if the EU collapses in future it will do so with catastrophic effects for member states, if it doesn't then those member states will cease to be sovereign nations in their own right.
No-one ever claimed UK independence would be a walk in the park, but we did claim it was a mountain worth climbing.
