can we all agree that mario kart on the snes battle mode is the best

I had a US SNES and remember my games being about £50 or £60 each, sometimes more. :(

I was quite lucky as I had a part time job while I was at school so managed to put the money aside for it all. Loved having a Sony Trinitron TV and SF2 Turbo - my mates were really jealous. :)

Double dash was the worst. Mario Kart 7 was my favourite, but that had the least emphasis on items so I'm biased.

Despite its ugly, pancake flat, mode 7 graphics, Super Mario Kart is still the best Mario Kart game in my opinion. You can keep your cheap power-up spam, pretty scenery but dull courses MK8D because nothing can beat SMK's sensation of being on the ragged edge at 150cc with your eyes on stalks. It's a shame that an ostensibly child-like game from 1992 still has edge over its more modern successors, but that's Nintendo for you.

Does anyone know of a more modern game that has the same feel to it?

Oh God i hate micro machines. I have no idea how I had the patience to sit through and complete turbo tournament 96 on the mega drive when you can't see **** all on the screen. Tried playing it again recently and I started to understand how a person could be driven to throw the controller at the TV screen :p. NOPE not for me anymore :p

That was kind of the beauty of it though. You had to really know the tracks and pick out land marks for when to turn on some of the faster ones. Rage inducing sure, but fun with friends played locally.

If you want a real test of your patience try the current micro machines free to play app. It's so 'pay to win' it's unreal! I had to uninstall it the other day as it was driving me mad. Plus I felt like a filthy casual playing mobile games. Never again.

Can't wait to try out 200cc. I imagine it's going to be a bit difficult!

It's very easy against AI as you just pick the slowest kart and they all adapt to your speed :p

It's brutal online though and once you get a high enough ranking you will start playing in random 200cc games.

It'll take me a while then. My net gain last night was +19 after around 8 races!

Track knowledge makes a big difference. Don't forget that having 10 coins give you an extra bars worth of top speed too. It's worth missing item boxes to get coins until you have 10.

Yeah I don't really know some of the tracks very well yet and not many of the shortcuts. I am always going for coins though but yeah I should focus on that more than boxes in future - I'll keep more of an eye on my 10. I won my first race the other night it was so much easier after getting out of the midfield melee. Win some lose some. I don't get too stressed about it because it's just too much fun even if you do get constantly caned by items.

i tried to play mario kart on the snes recently but had to stop after 3 minutes. Obviously it was great at the time, but the relentless march of time and technology has rendered it unplayable by today's standards (in my opinion!)

I remember back in 2001 setting up ZSnes and playing MK online against my mate down the road. Talking to him in Yahoo Messenger trying to explain what an IP address was using a 56K Modem.

We got it set up and it was really fun!
