11 year old girl dies at drayton manor theme park

Obviously a travesty but it does make me wonder how this even happened.

Alton Towers have a very similar ride and i'd suggest it's nigh on impossible for you to fall out of it unless you were standing up or messing around.

Which has now been closed as well...

Going to save us a few ££ on not renewing our Merlin passes if they don't reopen it, since it's one of the few rides we can all go on together, and it's my partner and little boy's favourite

It will be standard procedure to close the same/similar style rides as happened when the Smiler accident occurred when they closed all rides from the same manufacturer. They will reopen them all if no fault is found with the ride or cars etc or implement any necessary changes that maybe deemed necessary.

The Rapids incident was a bit different though. It was down to being the lack of a teacher or other responsible adult to enforce what the signs said "no standing while on the ride". So what Thorpe Park, Lego Land and Alton Towers did smacks of a knee-jerk reaction to me.

Yes unlike the ATer's the Smiler incident DM or it's staff aren't at all at fault here, i have absolutely no qualms going on a Grand Rapids ride but rides like the smiler with your legs exposed at speed in such a manner i would definately have second thoughts about going on.

Very sad. RIP. :(

However, with the information that's been realised I'd go so far as to say that I'd expect the school to face some form of legal action for the lack of supervision.

They will have a student to teacher ratio to abide by, risk assessments and a duty of care to supervise and control the kids. Yes, the girl is responsible for her actions but as she is so young that legally the school will be expected to take more precautions for something like this. I'd fully expect the enforcement authorities to focus heavily on the school and the theme park to weed out the failure(s).

No doubt the HSE will be crawling over the park for the foreseeable future and the school will be sweating bullets as they're questioned. Let's not forget that the staff at Drayton Manor will be finding it hard to deal with, particular those in the immediate area/responding. Something like this will see staff in pieces for a long time.

I heard that they had the required adults to children ratio.

Kids aren't normally supervised on trips to theme parks.

I'm surprised 11 year olds are allowed on to a ride like that with no adult supervision though by the park.

Likely they'll change the rule going forward to exactly that.

Its all based on height, height to ride accompanied, height to ride alone.
Always has been, nothing related to numbers of adults that must accompany.

Ratio for this age group is 1:10 / 1:15 depending on the risk. Drayton's website currently says there is a free adult ticket available per 5 kids, AT does it for every 10 kids. We were never directly supervised on theme park trips once in the park (even at 12).

I appreciate that they use height rather than age as that's easier to measure. So they'll just increase the height then as proxy.
