Started of whistling for 6k miles and has now evolved into this. Checked engine oil and its seems fine. The sound kicks in even at the slightest touch of the pedal. Before yesterday i managed to get the noise down back to whistling by allowing the car to warm up a little, which worked for a few days but now it no longer makes any difference. What could be causing this? Turbo? Something else? What causes this sound and why? Can it be driven to a garage safely without incurring damage?

Noise gets much worse higher up in the rev band.

Here's a short video recording of the issue.

Seat Altea XL 2.0tdi BKD. 61k miles.

Thanks

No a turbo doesn't go up like that, it spins up as you have to rev it.. sounds more like a belt/chain/bearing or component such as a water pump/oil pump. Unless the turbo bearings are really shot (no oil)..

Have you checked the oil level?

I had something like that on my ford focus TDCI and it turned out to be the idler on the aux belt.

Sounds like a bearing as some have said. When was the cambelt and water pump last changed?

If its not the turbo that would be a huge sigh of relief.
We thought oil may have been an issue but we checked oil level and there seems to be plenty. Topped it with a litre of castrol 5w30 just incase. Im thinking bearings too. Engine temperature is stable and no warning lights on dash. Cambelt changed in the 40k region. Water pump is the original.

Seems like we all agree on the bearing front. Garage booked for Monday.

Air leak somewhere. I've replaced a blown out intake manifold gasket that whistled just like that before, and had a blown downpipe gasket sound similar. Kind of does sound like a dying turbo but can't tell from the video really, I would say the turbo won't spin that fast at just odd idle but diesels do use tiny little turbos so maybe it would?

Bkd 140 engine does spool the turbo quicker but to me it doesn't sound like a turbo. You'd have no boost what so ever.

That's why I've asked when the water pump was last replaced.

Mate has a bkd and his turbo gave the old police siren sound and had no boost what so ever. If you have no performance then I would say it is the turbo but op hasn't mentioned it.

Checked the throttle body? Could be the source of a whine if it's not opening properly when pressing the accelerator.

I had an almost identical issue on a Volvo D5 and it turned out to be the alternator bearings. Different engine but worthy of investigation.

Mate had this on his 1 series easy enough to check by spraying alternator bearings with wd40 see if it changes tone

Oil level was ok and you added a litre?
I think your engine might have a clutch on the pully, cheaper than a new alternator.

Should never overfill diesels unless you know where the overflow goes, often they will overflow into the inlet through the breather. This causes the engine to run away using the oil as fuel.

I seem to remember having something similar on my Focus years ago which turned out to be a bearing in the aux belt tensioner.
Get someone to rev the engine gently while you stick your head under the bonnet and maybe you can isolate it.
