Motorway speed limit could be cut from 70mph to 60mph to reduce emissions

Seriously though.. First it was to reduce congestion which I'm not sure has worked and now emissions?
 
Awful.
I don't mind graduated speed limits, and slowdowns to increase traffic flow at certain times f day/ business of roads,, these are shown to be efficient, but to slow a road system to cut emissions, when there are others bigger steps that could/should be taken first.
Catch themselves on.

Stick average speed cameras on the entire network first, and watch the speeds/emissions tumble without having to change any limits.
 
I think the opposite: remove speed limits on motorways, maybe initially at certain times of day. The M1 is a great road and what's the point in having a speed limit at 2 in the morning when nobody is using it? It costs the Government money to enforce the variable speed limits. Just seems pointless to me.

This is unfortunately so true.

Really surprised it has not happened already been expecting it for at least 10 years.

Even if only 1% of the cameras are actually working how many of us would take the risk ?
 
I wonder if rather than decrease speed limits, they increase fuel duty, that way more revenue for government and I bet a lot of people will slow down/drive more economically thereby reducing emissions and car usage. I hope they don't mind, but decreasing car use seems to be the only long term solution, perhaps offering schemes to get people to switch more more efficient/less emission engines?

But who knows, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

Off topic, but has anyone else played Democracy 3? this exact scenario can be played out in that game and my usual response is just that, increase fuel duty, clean air subsidies and invest in electrification of public transport.
 
Not only do I not think this should be done, I'd welcome some consideration of raising the speed limits in the right conditions. The 70 speed limit was set long ago. Human reaction times may not have improved but car technology has.

If they want to reduce emissions from cars then produce some credible public transport.

Exactly. Driving standards are a complete mess. Too many people who are incapable of properly controlling a motor vehicle have been given licences.

People manage to not crash for 1 hour per week in their lessons, sometimes doing half the speed limit, and then it is COMPLETELY ASSUMED that these people are actively capable of avoiding collisions and hitting stationary objects which is just completely wrong.

Most people just pass their Driving tests through pure LUCK lmao. It needs to change.

That would be a great way to push people towards electric cars...(But I Guess the outside lane would be pretty much empty :D )

Plus but I bet electric cars can't do that many miles at 80mph before there battery is flat..

Reducing it generally I don't think would work congestion wise - but I've been pleasantly surprised doing the M25 with the variable limits and a lot down at 50mph, etc. actually makes that bit of the journey a lot more stress free, generally flowing better if a bit mind numbingly consistent and only added a couple of minutes or so net to journey time. Before it would be intermittently bombing it along at "70mph", down to 30-40, back up to 70 again, etc. etc. and actually in hindsight more stressful.

The ironic thing is that current EV drivers are generally the least likely to be driving at speeds higher than 60mph, as battery drain is too high :)
 
Few years ago they were gonna raise it and now theyre gonna lower it?

All of this skirting round the problem and making scapegoats of motorists, just get the bloody nuclear power stations built already and stop faffing around putting band aids where the problems arent.
