That's a question of perspective. You don't have the right to challenge the appropriate Secrets Act (I presume US military must have to sign as we did) as a serving member of the military.

All well and good if you live in an Aaron Sorkin screenplay but in the real world of lobbyists, crony capitalism and corruption govts have to obey their own laws and those who point out that the govt is behaving criminally shouldn't be tortured for 35 years by that same govt of corrupt individual criminals.

I wonder what if any his punishment would be in any developed country other than Murka.

The naivety of people here who seem to genuinely believe a country like the USA or the UK can ensure the safety of its citizens and financial well being without secrets and without decision makers occasionally making decisions that have nasty consequences for innocent people beggars belief. Presumably they would agree with Mr. Corbyn that a Trident fleet sans missiles is a happy compromise....? I am sure these people are not evil, or anti fellow UK citizens, but their child like dream for how an effective government could be run is somewhat disturbing assuming maturity and some experience of real life.

I'd have him shot. Although Russia's umbrella (ricin) killing and the polonium killing perhaps carry that immeasurable level of putting the fear of God in the next would be traitor, and has a certain iron curtain, spy novel panache.

I think it should be pointed out that quote is from a few good men and is from the bad guy who is very much in the wrong.

Very interesting thread as it very much seems most of us fall very much on one side or the other on this story.

I suppose I better state my own opinion that just because he thought he was doing the right thing does not make it so.

Maybe he did not get hundreds or even thousands killed by his actions but frankly he could have and for that reason alone 11 years in prison and then making a fortune in book rights , TV appearances etc is probably not that unfair an outcome for both sides.

No sympathy for traitors even if it highlighted illegal activities and the murder of civilians, which would otherwise have gone undetected and unopposed?

but he(at the time) didn't act to highlight one particular incident of murdering civilians - what in particular are you referring to there?

rather a whole mass of documents covering all sorts of areas was released
 
Just think, if Eddie Snowden hadn't run away to hide in Russia, he probably could have been out of jail by now as well.

Manning was never accused of treason, and was acquitted of aiding the enemy.
