Asking for some help. My aiming in modern FPS games like Bf1, Bf4, CoD etc.... sucks. I do better with a pad. I was a PC gamer back in the day playing Counter Strike, Doom, Duke Nukem mainly and then moved onto consoles. Couple years ago I came to PC gaming on and off and now mainly play PC but can't hit anything. I have the odd good day here and there and that's it. Starting to wonder if at 39 y/o I just can't keep up no more? Help please, it's getting really frustrating and i'm starting to play more on console than i'd like to. Slower paced games are no problem like PuBG and DayZ where I actually have time to aim and the game play it a bit slower.

Does get harder - I'm mid 30s and don't have anything like the reaction times and eyesight of my late teens/early 20s when the older quakes were released.

A lot of mice these days have 345354353453 DPI and very mixed sensors - ideally you want something with a more moderate DPI and nice linear input rather than the typical laser mouse that is twitchy all over the place.

Aside from the point the mouse at the enemy, the rest tends to be about the mechanics in the specific game. Getting good at shooting other players relies on you understanding these mechanics.

Things to be aware of:
Is the game hit scan or projectile based? (Bullets in COD arrive at their target instantly and have a straight trajectory, in BF however they are projectiles which take time to reach the target and are subject to drop which means you need to lead your target if they are moving, the further they are the more you need to lead).
What are the movement penalties. (In CSGO for instance the penalties are very high, so players learn to stop and then shoot, in bf they are not so high, but still there)
Can you hipfire or should you ADS? (And what is the time to ADS penalty?)
What is the recoil like on your weapon?
Is the visual recoil the same as actual recoil (In BF for example the guns used to appear to recoil much more than they actually did)
Is there an increase in spread as well as recoil on a per shot basis?
How is in game lag compensation done?
How does accuracy/recoil/spread vary depending on whether standing, crouched or prone?
Is your mouse sensitivity too high?

Ultimately it's practice at a game that makes you good..

My mouse is a Logitech G700 which is set at 800dpi and I run ingame sensitivity of around 10-12% otherwise the cross hair goes all over the place.

Just practice, play a lot of CS death match if you want to improve. I'm 30 and I don't think my age has anything to do with my aim being worse than when I was 16, it's simply because I can't dedicate 8 hours a night to playing games anymore.

As mentioned, it's a case of learning the game mechanics and knowing what your limitations are. That all takes time and is actually hard to track how much you're improving until you come against less experienced players, suddenly you start hitting the top of the leader-boards and just seem to have an edge over some people. I would say it's perfectly natural to feel a little out of your depth on the type of games you mention, you may have grown too used to playing on the console, remember that there is subtle aim assist at work over there aiding you.

I would honestly go back to some of the old school, fast paced games for some practice on your movement and aim from time to time, even playing against high level bots will give you a good boost and build the feel back up. I used to play Quake 3 / Unreal Tournament for a good hour before playing a serious game of Counter Strike/Battlefield, it used to feel like playing in slow motion half of the time and really improved my game.

I was the same OP, my aim still has the odd potato moment but practise, use training areas in game and starting hitting the targets on the run and make a game of doing that.

I must have spent a good 20h in BF4 training area just hitting targets and trying to improve.

Muscle memory will kick in quickly, sadly there will always been people with 00000.1 sec reaction times and sadly as we grow more wise (read age) we get worse.

use a low sensitivity.this is where so many go wrong.mine is generally 400 dpi.
only hipfire.might sound odd but its faster than aiming up.with practice you can hit even at the longest distances.oldskool players play this way naturally as thats how fps started.you benefit also by a split second.which is often what you need.
game sense is one of the biggest things in fps.sounds stupid but knowing how and where people will come from helps.learn the maps you playing.

a older player will have slower reactions but if you have a decent game sense you can still do better than younger people with better aim if they running round like headless chickens.

Practice is all you can do, fire CSGO up against bots and make them gradually harder, twitch movements and reaction times are something that you need to build up again when playing FPS.

If I have a few months off shooters I'm bad for a few days until I get back into the swing of it.

I don't think age has much to do with it. I can still hit under 200ms same as early 20s and late 30s now. Get used to low sens.

A low sens won't hold you back but a high one can for a lot of people people. If you look at csgo for instant the average Pro sens is around 40-50cm/360 that's a good place to start.

Have a mouse pad that's at least 44cm wide and learn to use your arm for big movement.

I use 70cm for last few years in all games and can instantly 180 if being shot in the back.

It's far easier to learn to be faster with mouse movement then it is to gain precision through practice.

It's all about finding your ideal mouse sens. That works for you.

Remember a slow hit is better then a fast miss

If you go this route you'll need a decent sensor. So 3310/3360

Of course it's not for everyone. But worth giving it a try to see if it suits you.

Pro players are called pro players because they spend hours playing the same game over and over ! you don't become good at a game unless you play it more.

I'm 34 and id say I am a just above average FPS shooter. a lot of people take games to seriously , be competitive by all means but there will always be someone whos played the game more than you.

Best advice I can give is practice and patience , and also invest in a good gaming mouse , A lot of the pro FPS Shooters use a very low DPS setting around 400 - I use 1800 and find that works best for me.

Another tip is watch the pro's on Twitch ! You will learn stuff you didnt even know about it ! I've become a lot better player after watching the pros.

This mostly, at 30 there shouldn't be any reason your aim should be worse unless you've got some degenerative disease. It's mainly about muscle memory and CSGO pros will tell you that practising at least 8 hours a day is pretty much fundamental to keeping your aim in check.

I think also with age there are some plus points. Like experience. I used to have a heart attack years ago during clutch moments. Now with age I'm emotionally dead like a crocodile lol. Some good advice in here and watching pro players on twitch is a great idea. For battlefield check out Jika. He's certainly one of the best infantry players and played for SK and epislon (sp?)

He also has a very small viewship with a very slow chat so good for shooting any questions. He's a great guy but don't expect an entertainer. Relaaa is also amazing but his aim and playstyle is insane. So doubt you'll pick up much. Leadthemachine is also superb and had a walk through video on his you tube where he talks over live gameplay about his choices as he's playing. It's a really good video

Here you go. Sensitivity is 800dpi 2% in game. Around 74cm+/360

really? that's where i've been going wrong i always aimed with a lead in COD as just assumed it was like that, but if it's like unreal tournament insta-gib shock rifle style i'll change to that and see what happens

+1

That's a very good point. Some of the better players I remember watching when I used to play were not necessarily the crispest or stylish ones to observe, but they did intuitively have a knack of where to aim (or thereabouts) to yield a win a majority of the time.

In fact, I can recall thinking on some occasions that certain players had quite a sloppy style of execution (no pun intended) - but they got the end result. :)

Its practice. I'm nearly 43 and I can score better in BF1 than any game from 20 years ago. My tips of choice
in a new game are:

1) Play the single player to get your eye in
2) Avoid the temptation to run around spraying (basically camp, move, camp, flag etc)
3) Find you weapon class of choice. Mine is almot always sniper rifles
4) You will have off days and great days. If you're not hitting take a rest
5) Make sure you are comfortable and never play drunk or with a hangover!

Good luck and enjoy

On occasion I find myself playing very well at fps, then I look at the time and realise it's 9pm on a Friday night and that I'm sober and others almost certainly aren't!
