My New Zealand Residency Journey

You're moving to the other side of the world. With respect, a couple of grand here or there on a TV, your car, and a refund are hardly material concerns for what you're doing. These things don't actually matter.

I don't get your point? It's personal possessions that i want to keep and take with me. And why should i not claim what i'm entitled to? At the end of the day, this is just about my move, and what i post may help other people planning a move, a lot of people may not know about filling a P85 in to claim a tax refund, and frankly, £2500 isn't just a couple of grand really is it, that's a cheap car to start us off in NZ, or part of a deposit towards a house. I guess you throw £2500's away like spare change, just because it's a couple of grand

Best of luck, but intending to arrive with one day to spare seems a little foolish to me. What if you get ill? What if there's a strike? What if the plane gets diverted? What if...? Are you sure you shouldn't aim to be there with a month's leeway?

It'll be reet :D

If any issues arise, which is highly unlikely, i'll just send an email across to NZ immigration and take their advice.

OcUK NZ meet anyone lol

The point is that a lot of your comments seem to be related to money which would indicate that all of these minor amounts are taking up a more than needed amount of your focus. Don't sweat the small stuff. Maybe I'm mis-reading it

I think you are mags. I'm just trying to give other people an insight into what things cost and what's available to them etc. It makes no odds to me, well, it does, but I'm just trying to document everything in the hope that it Offers advice for others in my shoes. If anything, I'm lucky as I've got somewhere to live rent free when we arrive in NZ.

Just a quick update, we got our quote to move some of our stuff over to NZ, we are leaving quite a lot here but taking the most important stuff / stuff that costs a lot to replace and leaving stuff like the sofa and large items like beds as they cost almost £6 per cubic foot, therefore, our sofas would have been about £400 to move, and they aren't worth that much!
Anyway, we were quoted £973 for 165 cu ft, plus insurance at 3% of the overall value, so around £1150 all in. Not too bad.

I've started looking in to filling my P85 form in which means we'll get a nice tax rebate some time in October, we reckon around £2500 between us both but we'll see!

I've decided i'm going to advertise my car this weekend but for a price i want, and in the middle of the ball park figures that they sell for, i'm in no immediate rush to sell, but if it goes for what i ask (or close to) then i'll sell. For the record, the cheapest one on autotrader with similar miles and age is £17k, then they go up to around £19/£20k for the over optimistic sellers lol, i', going to advertise for £17950 i think and see what happens.

Honestly man, just sell as much as you can. When I moved over, the girlfriend and I had about 6-7 large boxes of crap that we shipped over. It took longer than expected to get here, and by the time it did, neither of us could even remember what was IN the boxes. We already had most of the place kitted out through TradeMe and online sales and absolutely did not need anything that came in the boxes.

That's the thing though, we're in no rush to receive our items, we're moving into the annex of my wifes parents house to start, which is already furnished, the stuff we are taking is stuff we really like and can't be replaced in NZ, or stuff that would cost a lot more in NZ to replace than to ship it over, why pay for something we've already got again?

With regards to the car, handing it back and terminating the agreement will not count as a default. If the value of your car is around what you owe then I'd do this. It's easy and you are not at the mercy of buyers. You need to be upfront about finance owing on the car if you try to sell it as technically it's not yours to sell until it's paid off. This will show up on any HPI check that a prospective owner does when they view the car. This will put some people off but not all. Any buyer with half a brain will pay the finance company directly or stay with you while you do it to make sure.
If it's a popular model and relatively new (which I'm assuming it is seeing as it's got £17k owing after 2 years) then it's worth hawking it round some dealers of the same make. Some will offer to buy it off you if it's an easy car for them to sell. You won't get top money though.

If any issues arise, which is highly unlikely

I wouldn't say it's highly unlikely at all especially with long haul flights. The consequences of getting there late are so dire that to risk it for the sake of a weeks holiday in Thailand seems absolutely insane.

Yeah, what Fox said. Don't risk it. You will really be stuffed if you miss the date. A thousand and one things can go wrong with long-haul flights. My mate who just flew back to the UK from Oz for a business meeting ended up 1 day delayed due to an issue at the stop over in the middle east somewhere. Anything can go wrong. I wouldn't gamble with something like that.

You might want to look into hiring a 20 foot shipping container. You can ship you car with room for boxes of belongings.

I know it's irrelevant now but did you look at Knightsbridge doctors for your medical?

Only £350. These are the same guys that did my Canadian medical, which is broadly the same (urine, blood, X-ray and general fitness).

I'd kinda agree there, but at the same time taking stuff is useful as you don't have to rush out and buy everything new. Also remember that it's going to take a month or two to get to you. You're lucky in the respect that you can live with family so stuff like bed/TV/cooking utensils isn't an issue, but something to think about.

We did is slightly differently - a 40ft Seacan, a car, a 20ft seacan from elsewhere in Canada and another container of other goods as well. Out of all that I had about 3 suitcases. :p My other half still hasn't opened some of the boxes and it's been almost 18 months. Slightly different though that we didn't pay for any of it to be shipped.

Not having to go out and buy a sofa, or TV, an entire kitchen, or a car was useful - when it finally arrived. So it's swings and roundabouts really, there's a win and lose argument for both sides.

No I didn't, but even with that medical being £350, after factoring travel to London and accommodation for a night, it would still be the best part if £600/£700. I was already in Auckland when I got my medical.

I have looked into this and it's a last resort, although it won't affect my credit score, I would struggle to get finance from BMW in the future if needed.

My flights are booked, I don't have to worry about connecting flights as my flight is a stop in Sydney for refuel, it goes on to AKL. The only possible problem would be from BKK. Apart from a strike, worst case I'll get there a few hours late, or next day. There's always solutions. I'm prepared to take my chances going from past experience with Emirates.

Well i think us that signed up to the voda deal have had a really good deal.

Galaxy S8+ = £779 retail

Voda 30gb data / unlimited txt + calls plus free spotify for 24 months worth 9.99 + £96 cashback = equivelent of £34 / month

£34x24 = £816

Therefore, our contract is costing £37 for 2 years, i bet your sim only deal is more than £1.54/month ;)

Just got a good deal for my wife on the S8, she still has 7 months left on her current contract with Three, so i phoned to see how much it would cost to pay off, anyway, they have waived an early upgrade fee of £188, free phone, £47 month with unlimited calls and texts and 2gb data which she won't use, includes feel at home too, and then three months line rental reimbursed after 4 months. Pretty pleased with that!

I don't understand why you took out 2 x 24 month mobile phone contracts if you're moving to New Zealand in the very near future?

Why not? My contract costs me £1.54 a month on top of the cost of the phone and my wife can use hers in NZ anyway on three. But nice stalking ;)

It's hardly stalking when I've ordered an S8 myself and follow the thread to keep up to speed. Three's Feel at Home service isn't intended to be used abroad for that long, and the service is absolute **** for things like streaming and media playback.

This offer is intended to be used by UK residents travelling abroad, and Three reserves the right to suspend the service in the event the UK allowance is used exclusively abroad for two (2) months within a twelve (12) month period.

Again, we both got very good deals on our contracts, we both wanted to upgrade, i was due one and got a very good offer, she wasn't due one and was tied into her contract anyway, but got offered an upgrade too. Ultimately, both work out very good deals on phones we wanted so i don't see the problem, we'll just get sim only contracts in NZ when needed. It's our money to spend :)

Also, Feel at home was sufficient for both of us in the 9 weeks total we've spent in NZ the last 2 years.

If you want to start your own food business I suggest bringing the equipment with your TV and car if you are concerned about the cost of things vs UK ;).

Agree with the folks suggesting to take less, I still have a couple of boxes (well rather the wife does) that are UNOPENED. We have been in Oz for 5 years.
