So, about a month ago the gf and I bought a new (used) car for her from a main dealer.

Part of the condition of the sale was that they fixed a couple of very minor issues and put some new tyres on the rear.

She picked the car up and within 30 mins an error message pops up indicating a bulb failure. I had a hunt and realised it was one of the reverse lights so replaced the bulb. Minor annoyance.

Next day one of the tyre pressure sensors alarms as we're heading away for the day. We pull over as soon as possible and I check the tyres - can't for the life of me see anything in them or any signs of deflation. However to play it safe we drive to the nearest place with an air pump. Check the pressures and find that the tyres they'd replaced had very low pressure in both. I pump them both up and we wait a bit to see if there's any loss of air. There isn't but by now we're quite a bit behind so have to cancel the plans. Very annoying. Continue to monitor the pressure and it's holding fine. No punctures. No leaks on the beading. Problem must have been under-inflation by the dealer. Incompetence.

Two days later we go to head away again and about 2 minutes from home the car starts making an awful whirring noise from the front end. GF pulls over, I stick my head under the bonnet to try and locate it. No joy and slowly the noise fades away. Think 'bugger this' call the garage and get it booked in. They can't take it for about a week...so a 3 day old car and they won't even look at a problem for a week.

We wait and both notice that this fault only occurs when the engine is cold. It disappears as it warms up hence why it faded when I was trying to listen to it. We make the garage aware of this fact.

Eventually we get it in and they insist on going for a test drive with her straight away. Yes, that's right - we've driven the car to them with a problem that only presents when it's cold and they want to go for a test drive when it's warm. Obviously we go out and there's no noise. They essentially say bring it back if it gets worse.

We book the car in again a couple of weeks later. Drop it off Friday lunchtime under the proviso they're going to investigate and let us know by Fri evening. Evening comes around and we've had no phonecall so the gf calls the dealer 4 times. No answer. Eventually on the 5th attempt we get a pickup and they basically explain they took it straight out for a test drive and there's no noise. That's right. They took the car that makes a noise when it's cold out on a test drive straight after it had been dropped off from 20 miles away...
So...the gf losing even her infinite patience points out the error of their ways and suggests that they keep it overnight and test it when cold in the morning. Dealer agrees.

So, roll on the next day and it gets to 1pm and we've heard nothing. GF calls and leaves a message for them to call her back. No callback. Calls again at 2:30pm, same. No callback. Calls again at 4pm. No callback. Calls again at 5 and finally gets through to someone who tells her to come and collect the car.

Turns out, when she gets there, that they haven't tested the car. The reason being they didn't even know it was there. Having completely run out of patience the gf asks for the complaints procedure.

We've since tried escalating it and cannot get a response from anyone. Nobody responds to mails. Nobody returns calls. We've got a car that we've owned less than a month. That has had a fault reported to them since it was 3 days old. That had two STUPID errors. That has been in their dealership a number of times and hasn't had the fault investigated under the clear conditions we stated. We've had utterly crap service. Have never once been offered a courtesy car or even a collection service.

Basically...wtf do we do? I'm at the point where I'm starting to look for ways to return it and get our cash back.

I'm not sure I get it.

What's the issue? The tyre/bulb stuff seems irrelevant, so do we basically have just a cold start noise issue?

Just book it in at another dealer and get it fixed under warranty. I doubt you can reject a car for one minor issue however incompetent they've been so far.

The bulb i'd agree is largely irrelevant, just an annoyance. However the tyre point I'd say is an indication of something. Why can't they even inflate a frigging tyre properly? It's not a lot to ask. You shouldn't have to check the tyre pressure on a car picked up from a main dealer.

The issue being the complete lack of any kind of service from them. We don't actually know if the issue is minor because they haven't been able to diagnose it because they can't follow simple instructions to TEST WHEN COLD.

Now I could go to another dealer but we're hillbillies up here and the next nearest dealer is about a 40 mile further round trip which is a ballache however is swiftly becoming the option I may have to take.

What's the noise sound like? How old is the car?

Noise is a whirring as soon as you give it any decent throttle. Doesn't do it immediately on start but after about 2 mins or so. Then after about 10 mins running it fades away. Rises and falls with revs. I couldn't quite place where it's coming from but it's definitely the engine bay. Car is a 2014 Cooper S, but the last shape, not the newest.

Send a recorded letter stating you intend to reject the car unless the problem is fixed within a week. They'll be over you like a rash to sort it.

For what it's worth, it sounds like belt whine.

Go full tactical Kindai? It's an option.

You've made 2 attempts to give the car to them to fix it. That's where my patience with incompetence runs out.

At this point, forget pandering or chasing them, LOIC.

^^@jpaul, not similar to either of those. I've just tried to catch it via video now but the car is still too warm from being driven so it's not doing it. Best I can describe it as is it sounds like the cabin fans are on - except they're not and it's coming from the engine! (Also not the main fan).

Kindai I think I'm at the same point you would be. Tempted to give mini UK a shout and see if they're willing to do anything on our behalf before I unleash the full blastwave.

I love that stage 1 of their complaints procedure is to contact my local mini dealer...

So effectively they've made one attempt to fix it and they've had a screw-up where they forgot the car was there. This is poor service without question but sadly it's often the case that for some issues you need to take the car in a couple of times before they can replicate the problem. This is annoying, but it happens.

Book it in again, drop it the night before. If needs be use another dealer. This seems to be being made into a mountain rather than the mole hill it seems to be.

They've had 2, the other booking they chose to go for a test-drive in it straight away rather than take it in which is what the gf requested. My biggest annoyance tbh is the complete lack of contact and us chasing them multiple times. Then the lack of contact once we lodge a complaint about...lack of contact.

Main dealers are all incompetent and the brand complaints process is a waste of time VW couldn't even get our local dealer to write an appology for twice trying to give my wife a dangerous courtesy car! Cut youe losses and take it to a local specialist for much better and cheaper service!

As above, write to them remiding them that as the goods were obviously faulty on collection and theyve already had 2 attempts at fixing it at considerable inconvenience you intend to reject the goods. They will either bend over backwards to sort it out or you never have to put up with them again.

Usually you have to go into the dealer ranting and raving demanding they fix the car and say you're taking a courtesy car until its sorted to get anywhere.

At least that's how it works at our local Ford main dealership.

Had two issues with a Focus still under warranty, one was the fuel filter which they kept attempting to fix with overnight software updates, the other was with the Sony stereo that kept making a popping noise through all the speakers every ten seconds, on every source, even when it was switched off. The initially said its because you're using your phone as a satnav playing the sound through the Bluetooth

Ask them to fire up another car of the same type (I expect they will have some others) and have a listen yourself if they do it too. Cars can make all kinds of odd noises that are completely normal.
