Help with thank you for Sikh family

We used to live close to a Sikh temple, tbh it was a utter pain and quite frankly it needed shutting down. Every time i walked/cycled/drove by some awesome curry was being cooked which wafted in the air which in turn made me want to order/cook/ curry and put on weight
Also, while we are at is the there a reason for the different coloured Turbans or is just a hey i fancy wearing a red one today ?
Pretty much that - there are styles of turbans that can indicate caste, but colour is usually just a personal choice.

go to an asian sweet shop and get a box of gulab jamin (most indians favourite sweet made from milk powder, deep fried then soaked in sweet syrup), another of ras malai (indian cheese cake) and you may as well get some barfi (indian toffee / fudge) and gajjar halva (indian version of carrot cake) whilst your at it too. don't bother buying it elsewhere won't be fresh.
type of turban can indicate caste but the caste system is actually against sikhism. sikh guru's tried to abolish inequality in all of it's form and so their teachings are all about equality. this si why the first baptised sikh was a woman to show women are equal to men (this was over 300 years ago too before they could even vote in most western countries). however culturally india is backwards and it has over 1 billion people and sikhs are a minority so they haven't been able to have the impact intended in terms of treating women as equals.
baptised sikhs are not allowed to cut their hair, drink or smoke nor eat meat, eggs, fish, etc. dairy is fine. again this is why non baptised sikhs or certain castes will drink alcohol and eat meat regardless, again culture vs religion. baptised sikhs will be a lot stricter. india in general was and still is a vegetarian country. only the wealthy eat meat. the majority in poverty will never have tasted meat, not in the traditional sense anyway of goat, chicken or fish. they will eat stuff nobody else does normally.
some sikhs will refuse to wear certain colours. nam thari sikhs especially. they will only wear certain colours period in terms of all their clothing not just turbans.

This is an understandable misconception but it's not the case. It's an overlap between religion and culture. Alcohol consumption (any intoxicant) is strictly forbidden for Sikhs. However in Punjabi culture (and most Punjabis are Sikh or born in to Sikh households) there is a lot of drinking/partying! That's usually where people understandably get confused. Practicing Sikhs will be non-drinkers and vegetarian.
OP: if you want to play it safe, go with chocolates and flowers

Maybe something that you like and want them to experience? Maybe a meal or sweets that you know they won't have had before?

surely a question of interpretation - I know one guy for example who claims he can consume some alcohol but not to the point where he gets 'intoxicated'/drunk
which kind of makes sense as any number of every day things could be an 'intoxicant' from the fluoride in some drinking water through to the trace amounts of various ingredients people were getting irrational over in the vaccines thread

Correct. They are warriors also with a decent sense of morality.
No other group has been decimated by Muslims more than Sikhs...
I always wondered why my Sikh primary school friend was like 'We don't like Muslims and keep away from them'. When you read their history, I understand why now! Lol!
Also before the whole sex abuse scandal with British girls it was going on with Sikh girls also...Sikhs in Britain were screaming about Muslims in the 80's that they were grooming and raping their daughters....and nobody listened.

So basically your primary school friend had bigoted parents who didn't like muslims?
I'm not sure there have been similar mass rape cases with Sikh girls, I know there have however been issues where Sikh girls have been found dating muslim men and vice versa and both communities seem to lose their **** over that sort of thing in the sort of way some redneck in Alabama would finding out his daughter is dating a black guy.
In fact there have been various cases recently of some in the Sikh community disrupting marriages to non-Sikhs. While I know plenty of cool Sikhs I don't think it is wise to pretend there are no issues and that muslims are always the bad guys etc..

I never really buy it myself. I'd try the one at Charing cross. Decent sweets on woodlands road I've bought once from there.
Glasgow sweet house is another that I've bought here once and I buy samosa chaat from all the time. It's on cathcart road. If you go here get a vegetable samosa chaat and get everything with it and extra chilli sauce if you can handle it. You will love it proper authentic Street food. Personally I think this place is better but it's not in a great area. Lot's of dodgy folk operate in this area now. Romanians selling kids on street corners, etc.
The Charing cross one in a great area and easy to go to without worrying too much. Both are great to be fair.

This. Every Sikh I've known has been able to drink me under the table! Went to a Sikh wedding once. Groom was very well off and put on a free bar mainly for his non Sikh guests. We hardly got a look in3 deep at the bar all night long.
