I plan to use the Ryzen 1700 as a CPU but with a 1070 rather than a 1080ti. Will this still be do-able with this setup?A decent and quick CPU (Ryzen 7 1700/1700X or i7 7700K) paired with a good motherboard that allows overclocking, 16gb of RAM and a 1080ti to get reasonable frame rates, although 2 x 1080tis in SLI would be preferable.
The question is why 4k rather than 1440p?
1440p with a 27inch monitor looks awesome - I have one paired with a GTX1080 and everything flies.
So I could handle 1440p with that hardware?I agree with ExRayTed - 1440p is still a great experience and even a GTX 1070 will plough through games at ULTRA paired with the Ryzen 1700.
The hardware hasn't quite caught up with 4K yet compared to 1440p gaming. And, personally, a single card solution is a lot easier than SLI and, as Ted mentioned, that would be the preferable solution for 4K but that road can lead to a lot of frustration - especially to the uninitiated such as yourself. I abandoned SLI a couple of years ago as it was too hit and miss with games and fraught with driver issues and config difficulties - but it's a 'horses for courses' type thing. Some people love it...
This is a great monitor - 27" IPS 1440p G-Sync - it really has it all, great panel (IPS being superior to TN), G-Sync for a smoother gaming experience and it looks very sleek.

A Ryzen 1700 coupled with a GTX 1070? Easily.So I could handle 1440p with that hardware?
Whats the difference between the 1700 & the 1600?If you are just gaming then you could easily drop down to an R5 1600. The £100 saved is almost the difference between a GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. Also if you don't plan to SLI then a B350 board would save another £40+.
Interesting, is it worth doing do you think?A Ryzen 1700 coupled with a GTX 1070? Easily.
I'm running an aging clocked 2500K, 16Gb with a GTX 1070 and game at ULTRA at 1440p.

Sorry, you've lost me?
Do you have 2500K or ivy bridge?
If you have - then another option is clocking the CPU to 4.3/4.5Ghz, 16Gb memory and then adding either an RX 580 8Gb/GTX 1070 for 1080p or GTX 1070 for 1440p (perhaps a GTX 1070 as would compliment the RYzen build)
If you're not happy with the result transfer the GTX 1070 to the new build.
I would/have - but if you've just bought a 1080p monitor it's probably a sore topic?I meant is it worth going for 1440p gaming? is it actually worth planning a build around?

A decent 1080p monitor is still perfectly good for gaming...
EDIT: I should add that i bought my 1440p Dells for things other than gaming - but gaming res was a pleasant bonus...
It's not a problem plus the GTX 1070 will give you even greater FPS at 1080p - or you could drop to an RX 580 8Gb and save some money (but not if you're planning on upping to a 1440p).Im sort of wishing I had now, although the budget for that was around £300 and I overspent to £350. Maybe in a year or so![]()

Yep, agree with lee, the 1600 really is the sweetspot for a pure gaming PC if you want to save another £100.You get two less cores (6 cores rather than 8) with the R5 1600/X. It should be plenty for just a gaming pc. The extra 2 cores on the R7 1700 would be of use for things like video editing/rendering or twitch streaming whilst doing other stuff in the background etc.
Would the 1700 give me any benefit for gaming at all? Is it more beneficial in the future to have the 8 rather than the 6?You get two less cores (6 cores rather than 8) with the R5 1600/X. It certainly does help, thanks for the clarification. The lower core options would be more than sufficient for 4k gaming. 1600 Ryzen or i5 7600k.
To be honest having a 1080 as a minimum you'll be able to enjoy 4k without a struggle, anymore beyond that well it'll be nice and smooth. I personally think 4k gaming below a 1080 would not really be enjoyable but thats just my opinion buddy
Hope this helps, I use an AMD setup and the Intel setup (which is the one in my sig)
