I'm in need of a new laptop mostly for work (coding, video editing).

Was tempted by a Surface Pro 4 but kinda want to be able to game on it too. So am now eyeing up the latest Dell XPS 15. Seems to have a good GPU with the 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050?

I mostly play Arma3 on high specs on my desktop PC and that is only a mere GTX 670. The Dell XPS will have similar i7 CPU and same ram.

So can I expect to be able to run Arma3 on high specs on the Dell? Want to hook it up to TV too via HDMI perhaps.

The XPS 15 will be suitable for your work needs but at best only light gaming.

The reason I say this is that with the XPS 15's, they tend to throttle the performance once the CPU / GPU temperatures hit around the 72c mark (gaming FPS will be lowered from say 55fps to 25fps for example). In a way this is expected for a slim laptop of this kind but other slim gaming laptops out there have higher temperature tolerances so just be aware of this - my old XPS 15 9560 would throttle in BF1 within 40 minutes of game play as a result. The 1050 isn't a bad chip but it is generally classed as level entry in this market, most games will require to be ran at medium settings in order to achieve suitable frame rates.

In my opinion I would look into 1050Ti / 1060 laptops if you want to have the best overall gaming experience for your needs.

Ok guess I was wishful thinking then. Any laptop recommendations? I don't want anything too heavy/cumbersome as will be looking to go out with it lots. Probably pipe dreaming about that + high end gaming though.

Why not take a look at the new Gigabyte Aero 15, a bit more expensive than the XPS 15 but it's an excellent bit of kit.

If you play just ARMA 3 just look for a good CPU with a minimum GPU. I used to even play ARMA 2 on my integrated gpu on the i5 4670k

I have an XPS 13 i5 but that is not enough to run A3 well

Sounds interesting, few reviews claim loud fan noises and uncomfy inputs though?

Being that this laptop has only just been released, the first few batches manufactured sadly are going to contain a few examples that have these minor issues present. These will iron out in time though.

Gigabyte's RMA is also UK based so warranty repairs are all handled in the UK. It's also been reported by a fair few new owners that a problem surrounding the keyboard & functions in particular when gaming is present - though I believe Gigabyte have already issued a new firmware to rectify this.
