Anyone else cut their own hair?

I tried cutting my own hair last month. My partner bought me a hair trimmer for xmas, so I thought I'd give it a go. It worked out about as badly as you'd expect it to considering my complete lack of practice, and I ended up looking like I had sudden onset alopecia. Luckily a friend of mine is a hairdresser and she managed to salvage it. Thing is, I'm due a trim again and as they say, practice makes perfect...

As already said whooshing the clippers all over is easy, but I think it just looks fuzzy. I did this myself for a couple of years, got pretty good at doing it evenly and quickly but looking back at photos it looks like either of the 2 following things:

1. I'm someone who cuts my own hair.
2. I had a complete head shave a month ago and it's growing out.

A good barber can blend from 0.5 at the lower back and sides to 2 inches long on top with no problems whatsoever, finished with a cut-throat around the edges.

My GF is a trained hairdresser and cuts hair for friends and family but still marvels at the workmanship of my barber when I come home with a haircut: "How do they blend it from nothing to that long?", she asks. I guess they're used to working with short hair and not messing about with colourings and straightening etc.

Exactly, even barbers get someone else to do it!
It's just about practice. Barbers practice on other people but, amazingly enough, not themselves. If they spent hours practising on themselves they'd be great at that, too.

Hair cutting isn't rocket science. It's technique and muscle memory, but like a razor shave, easily learnable with practice.

You seem to be making out that it's of equivalent difficulty to landing on the moon or something . Just because you / people you know haven't figured it out, it doesn't mean that nobody else can.

I cut my own hair with clippers grade 2 all over and wife does line at the back.

I have some cheap Wahl clippers about 5 years old but even though I kept them oiled they are just blunt now and struggle (stall) through my not thick hair! They also pull when doing back line.

I want to buy some more and don't mind spending a bit for some good ones that will last. There seems to be a big variation in price from Argos cheapies to professional products designed for salons costing over £100.

Any suggestions?

When my wife and I moved to London about 10 years ago, we saw how much it would cost for me to get a trim at the local barbers and decided that it would be better if we got some clippers from Boots and did it ourselves. Cost me £10 for them and I must have saved a small fortune since then as it's about £10-15 for a trim around here and I have one done every month or other month. My wife used to give me a grade 2 sides and back with grade 4 on top, until one evening she was distracted by a film on TV in the background with the Rock and Vin Diesel and forgot to put the grade comb on the clipper......apparently she liked the look so now I have grade 0.5 or 1 all over.

Hardly, he's saying that anything other than the most bland trivial haircut like clippers all over is not going to look good done yourself, some haircuts are for all intents impossible to do yourself. By all means show us a video of someone doing a pompadour haircut on themselves.

Since i have been cursed with the Ray Reardon from birth, i have had a number 1 since my mum stopped giving me a bowl cut in 1984.

I dont actually look like that , more Brad Pittish but the hairs the same.

I'd really like to buy one if anyone can suggest a good model?

Looks good thanks. I see it only comes with a couple of the plastic grade things but I hope the ones from my old Wahl fit. I generally use a no2.

Buy something else from Wahl if need be. As long as it's Wahl you will be fine. I chose the Balding as I use no guard on both my face and head and just leave it for 2-3 weeks then do it again. I have a 1:1 hair to beard ratio and it works for me. I got from baby smooth to about a no2 all over then back again.

the wahl balding is designed for those wanting a really close cut

Electric trimmers all over every 7-10 days. No guard round the ears as well to tidy stragglers. Get my neck tidied up whenever visiting family. Low maintenance hair ftw.
