Got to fly to chicago next month for work.

Any suggestions on which airlines to avoid or go for? Looks like im stuck with flying from heathrow.

It's only about 8 hours and they're all much the same in economy and business. Go with the airline that offers the best schedule.

BA looks set to be hit by industrial action again in the near future, so I'd personally avoid them until the issue is resolved.

Not sure what you're meaning here  Are you looking for flights which don't aim to crash or something? Pretty standard affair to get from here to America really. Just pick one that suits you for time / price / no of stops.

I think even the most obtuse of OcUK posters is able to realise that he is trying to find out if there are any particularly good quality airlines to opt for, or equally are there any that offer a mediocre experience and should be given a wide berth.

Or maybe, as your post evidences, not.

If Virgin Atlantic fly direct there and you're flying business class I'd pick them. Their classes go economy > premium economy > upper class, no business class as such. Which means if your company's travel policy lets you fly "business" you can go upper. It's about the same price as other business class seats anyway, but feels a bit more like first class especially if you get the car service to Heathrow etc.

United seem pretty popular lately.

I've been waiting for this, took 6 posts, GD is slacking!

That said, I flew United to Chicago last year...it's alright, actually better than okay as the plane was empty and I had the middle 3 seats all to myself and lay acrossed them and slept both trips.

I believe the appropriate phrase is "LOL".

Jokes about beating up their passengers aside, I actually do avoid United due to poor experiences with them. And if you're vegetarian by any chance, definitely avoid United because their vegetarian meals are not vegetarian; or take your own.

If there's an option Virgin Atlantic. Always had good experiences with them. Better planes, better food, better staff.

I've used KLM personally for the most part when flying to the US though not always the most direct route and they often code share with BA. Generally reasonably priced and a reasonable level of service.

Fun fact:

KLM stands for Koningklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij which means "Royal airline company".

Yes, I am Dutch.

Yes, I am Dutch.

I'm 99% sure on one of my hops from Bristol to Amsterdam I was flown by the Dutch King (or atleast he was copilot) - he looks like my dentist and I remember thinking that one of the pilots looked like my dentist heh.

Yep, as Raymond posted above, he really is one of the coolest royals in the world. He's had quite a few stories which elevate him to legend status.

Yeah I saw the articles about it a couple of weeks back or so. I can't be 100% sure but as I said looks like my dentist and I remember one of the pilots once reminded me of my dentist - I've done a few flights on KLM via Bristol so a good chance it was kind of cool.

Virgin Atlantic. Upper class. Every time.

It's a pain they stop flying there later on this year, as I have to get to Chicago in December. Had to settle for BA Club World, which sounds a bit grim from the reviews on seat guru. But it was cheap as chips.

Cheap like £500 return in Club World?

Cheap due to my random collection of Avios points.

Not sure what the retail would be on that, in the region of £2k I'd imagine.

[edit] I think I must have booked during a sale, the same flight I booked (which was just over £2k in Avios points) is now over £6k.

Few years back American Airlines had a really early Chicago flight (7:45AM from Heathrow). Was mostly empty. Every passenger pretty much had a whole row to them selves, and I mean entire row as in 10 seats. Got to Chicago in time for Lunch. Most relaxing start to a trip ever.

I've heard United Airlines can't be beaten...

...but their passengers can!

:D
