Its a sad society that we now live in but maybe it's time that Our police all start carry weapons?

They should not have to be fighting off armed individuals with only a batten.

dont they have tasers.

Who's going to pay for all the training weapons, weapon storage facility outfitting at every police station etc anyway.

don't you know there's no magical money tree (unless politicians want a raise)

Only if they're maintained to the same standard current firearm officers are. Last thing we want is a repeat of that taser incident but with a more lethal weapon.

On the other hand potentially could have been worse with training not as stringent (lets be honest they can't train them all that well). Could have been more civilian casualties if training wasn't as sufficient.

Is the arms race with criminals a poor argument?

I feel for the officer but I'm not sure :(.

No - fortunately bomb/suicide vest type attacks are rare and mass shootings even rarer.

For the run upto the election and immediate future it would be crazy not to have every officer atleast accompanied by one person with a firearm in central London and increased capabilities in major cities though.

Probably expensive but if I was PM I'd seriously consider larger scale deployment of the army through to next Sunday night working alongside police in a wider capacity across the country as a temporary thing - obviously not something we'd want on a more regular basis but I've a feeling with recent events and the election we might see more attacks in this cluster.

There's several police officer I know that I wouldn't trust with a stapler, let alone a firearm...

Around here you see more and more cops carrying Taser. Whats' the point in them having them if they don't bloody use them though? Only the other day around here the other day police were called to reports of a nutter standing in a garden threatening passing cars with a small knife (turned out he was gardening whilst off his head on cheap lager and knife turned out to be a pair of secateurs). Officers equipped with Taser were on the scene in minutes but did the √ of **** all. They asked him to give up. He didn't, he just shouted at them. They sat back in their car and waited for the arrival of two ARVs and the ******* helicopter. So I have to ask, why not use the Taser they're equipped with? Surely it's for calls exactly like that that they're equipped with it in the first place.

Now how much did calling the ARVs and the helo cost the tax-payer?

This.

Arming every police officer requires extensive training. It also requires massive amounts of money for the weapons and the storage. This government refuse to pay their wages let alone give them all guns.

It all comes down to risk, tasers are not 100% effective, especially when people are off their faces. If the taser doesn't work there really isn't much of a backup plan.

Chopper might have been overkill but I would imagine the ARV was on duty anyway so not really a "cost" there.

If this did happen then it would only be a matter of time till some guns got misplaced and end up on the street or some lone coppers attacked by youth gangs/extremists and robbing the guns and these being used in further attacks.

Australian police are armed, and we manage to find the money for it quite easily.

I see you've never been to Australia, where the scenarios you're describing don't actually occur.

I think it should be up to the police themselves if they want to be routinely armed. I am not opposed to the idea but neither do I see it as completely necessary.

I don't see the point, maybe for the terrorists with just knives, but if they are in a vehicle its not going to do much and if they have a vest it wouldn't be wise to shoot them. These cretins aren't afraid to die so the image of armed police wont put them off either.
